Since independence in 1991 we have watched
Estonia transform itself from a downtrodden Soviet republic to a
dynamic western European country with a capital city, Tallinn, which
boasts a bewildering choice of restaurants and cafes. Before independence
in 1991 the food in restaurants would have been consumed purely
for survival purposes rather than enjoyment.
In Tallinn and many other towns the medieval architecture
and cobbled streets are a must-see. In Narva, on the
border with Russia, the formidable castle stares broodily
at its neighbour across the river, still determined
to guard Estonia's borders.
The islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa
are rich with windmills, wooden churches and lighthouses
and are particularly fun to visit when Saaremaa is joined
to the mainland by ice during the winter.
