located on the beach south of Durres.

Itinerary | | Day 1 | FLY
TO TIRANA Fly to Tirana, transfer to hotel for 2 nights. |
| Day 2 | TIRANA
Begin with a full day city tour. Tirana is located on the site of a Byzantine
fortress and has been the capital since 1920. Included are visits to the Mosque
of Ethem Bey, the Clock Tower, the National Museum, National Art Gallery, Skanderbeg
Square, the Martyrs Cemetery, Grand Park and various government buildings. |
| Day 3 | TIRANA TO
VLORA Drive to Kruja. Visit the Skanderbeg Museum inside the restored
castle and wander around the old Turkish Bazaar, which has a wonderful selection
of authentic antiques and souvenirs. Drive to Fieri via Ardenica Monastery and
tour the Archaeological Centre of Appolonia in Pojan. Continue to Vlora and overnight
stay in hotel on Vlora beach. | | Day 4 |
VLORA TO SARANDA Continue along the Albanian
Riviera through the Llogara Pass with its stunning views of the Ionian coastline.
En route, visit the fortress of Ali Pasha of Ioanina at Porto Palermo. Check-in
hotel in Saranda for 2 nights. | | Day
5 | SARANDA AND BUTRINTI Morning visit
to Albanias most important archaeological site Butrinti and in the
afternoon visit the remains of a monastery of the 40 Saints, from which the modern
name of Saranda is derived. Rest of afternoon at leisure. | |
Day 6 | GJIROKASTRA AND BERAT Drive
to the museum city of Gjirokastra, birthplace of the former iron-fisted dictator
of Albania, Enver Hoxha. Gjirokastra is a strikingly picturesque town, perched
on the side of a mountain above the Drino River. The tour includes the district
museum, housed in the building in which Enver Hoxha was born and the pre-Ottoman
citadel, a former political prison and now a weapons museum. Continue to Berat
for an overnight stay. | | Day 7 | BERAT
TO DURRES
A half day tour of Berat, Albanias second most important
museum town, and called 'the city of a thousand windows' for the many windows
in its red roofed houses. The tour of Berat includes the Leaden Mosque, the King's
Mosque, the Bachelor's Mosque and the Alveti Tekke, a smaller shrine where the
Dervishes once practiced. After lunch, drive to Durres for tour of the Roman Amphitheatre
and the Archaeological Museum. Depending on your choice, you will either return
to Tirana for an overnight, or transfer to a hotel on the beach for the rest of
your stay (see Beach Stay Add-on). |

Albania
Beach Stay Add-on Albanias coastline is one
of its greatest attractions. It stretches over 450 kilometres with two distinct
landscapes the Adriatic and the Ionian. The Adriatic has shallow water
and long sandy beaches, edged by coastal pines. The Ionian coast has smaller rocky
beaches and deeper water, where citrus and olive trees dominate the landscape,
giving it a classic Mediterranean appearance. We can book hotels in Durres,
Kavaja, Vlora, Dhermi Beach and Saranda. Prices start from £25 per person
half-board. HOTEL ILLIRIA 
This
small, superior three-star hotel has 24 twin/double rooms and 2 family rooms each
with air-conditioning and en-suite bathroom (with shower), balcony, mini-bar and
satellite TV. Facilities include a bar/restaurant and pizzeria, outdoor terrace
and private beach. There is no lift. 7 nights half board including
transfers cost from £264 per person twin-share.
