North Vietnam is home to a number of the nations true highlights so should always be at the top of every visitors Vietnam holiday ‘hit list’. Hanoi has retained much of its French colonial charm so enjoy wandering through the wide city boulevards of the ex-pat district or the narrow streets of the Old Quarter with its plethora of shops and restaurants or enjoy a super sweet Vietnamese coffee on the banks of Hoan Kiem Lake and watch the world chug by.
The north is also home to Halong Bay with its magnificent limestone karst formations. Spend a night on the water on a luxury ‘junk’ boat and marvel at the seemingly endless sweeping vistas of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Or if you really want to get off the beaten track take an overnight train up the Red River Valley north to the cooler climes of Sapa, home to Vietnam’s highest mountain, Mt Fansipan. The town itself offers commanding mountain views and is home to a variety of hill tribe communities with the chance to see their traditional way of life.
