South Greenland Holidays

During the summer South Greenland fully lives up to its Danish name of “Green Land”, as this is the most fertile part of the country. In fact most of the flora of Greenland grows in this particular region as the winter climate is relatively mild and summer temperatures can even reach a positively tropical 18°C. This was the main reason why Erik the Red chose to live in South Greenland around 985 AD, after he was outlawed from Iceland so South Greenland is very rich in Viking ruins and culture. Sheep farming and agriculture play a very important part in South Greenland’s industry.

Large ice saltwater floes are a remarkable phenomenon of South Greenland. This ice is formed in the Arctic Ocean north of Greenland and carried by the current down the east coast, round Cape Farewell and up into South Greenland's bays and fjords. Unlike icebergs, the field ice consists of enormous sheets of frozen salt water, some up to three metres thick which are in constant motion.
