A Eurovision Geography Lesson
“What’s the capital of Belarus?” I recently asked my teenage daughter. “Minsk,” came a swift reply. I was very proud to think that she had taken an interest in my work as a travel marketer and maybe even flicked through one of Regent Holidays’ brochures. However, she told me that she only knew the answer because Phoebe from the sitcom ‘Friends’ had a boyfriend in Minsk! So, when it was time for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, I decided to give her an impromptu geography lesson.

Baku, Azerbaijan
By the time all 25 acts had performed in Saturday’s final, she knew which countries were neighbours to each other, what the capital cities of each was and how political the voting could be. Of course, being patriotic, we waved the flag for Blue but we cheered as Ell/Nikki’s rendition of ‘Running Scared’ saw Azerbaijan triumph in the end. Who knows, now that my daughter knows where Azerbaijan is and has rekindled an interest in geography, maybe I’ll take her to Baku for the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest and perhaps even on a tour of the whole of the Caucasus. I expect many other pop fans may feel the same and we’ll see a surge in bookings to this formerly obscure part of the world. See you in Baku in 2012!
