want to extensively discover this fascinating country,
this fly-drive will take you through high passes and
verdant valleys, tobacco fields and historical towns.
We have based this itinerary on good three/four-star
hotels and group A car hire. We can also quote for larger
cars and an upgrade to group B car hire can be arranged
for a small supplement.

| Day 1 |
FLY TO SOFIA
Fly to Sofia, pick up car at airport and drive to
hotel in Sofia. Check-in hotel for overnight stay. |
| Day 2 |
SOFIA TO MELNIK (VIA RILA)
Drive to Melnik (260 kilometres) and stop
at what is possibly Bulgaria’s most famous
landmark, Rila Monastery. Drive through green
forests to this remarkable site, which is very
important to the Bulgarians and played a key role
during the centuries of Turkish rule, helping
keep traditional religion and culture alive. Try
the delicious trout in one of the restaurants
in the surrounding area and arrive in Melnik,
where you can sample the renowned red wine. Check-in
at hotel for overnight stay.

| Day 3 |
MELNIK TO PLOVDIV
Drive to Plovdiv (280 kilometres) via Rozhen Monastery
and admire the ancient murals and stained-glass
windows. Stop in Bansko, which holds some of the
most beautiful national revival buildings. Continue
to Plovdiv and check-in at Hotel Trimontsium Princess
for 2 nights. |
| Day 4 |
PLOVDIV
Explore the Old Town with its mix of Roman
remains, Byzantine churches and national revival
examples, and savour the oriental sweetmeats and
sip slivovica, a tasty plum brandy.

| Day 5 |
PLOVDIV TO KAZANLAK
Drive to Kazanlak (145 kilometres) through
fields of roses, the trademark of this area called
the Valley of Roses. Visit the Museum of the Roses
and the Iskra Museum and shop for some rose oil-based
products. Check-in at hotel for 1 night.

| Day 6 |
KAZANLAK TO VELIKO TURNOVO
Drive to Veliko Turnovo (110 kilometres)
via Shipka Pass. Stop at Shipka Monastery, take
a short detour to Tryavna, one of the most beautiful
villages in the country, as well as visiting Dryanovo
Monastery en route. Arrive Veliko Turnovo and
check-in Hotel Gurko for 2 nights.

| Day 7 |
VELIKO TURNOVO AND ARBANASSI
This morning you have time to visit this
historical town built over a series of precipitous
hills divided by deep gorges and overlooked by the
massive, medieval Tsarevets fortress complex. Arbanassi
is a pretty village with more than 90 churches,
old houses and the magnificent Nativity Church.
This is the perfect place to buy hand-made embroidery. |
| Day 8 |
VELIKO TURNOVO TO SOFIA
Drive to Sofia (295 kilometre via Troyan
Monastery and Koprivshtitsa where you can rediscover
traditions and folklore of old Bulgaria. Check-in
hotel for overnight stay. |
| Day 9 |
FLY TO UK
Free morning before drive to airport, drop
off car. Fly to the UK. |
