Kosovo City Breaks
A city break in Kosovo is a rare and intriguing chance to discover a country still in its genesis. Declaring independence from Serbia in 2008, Kosovo is one of the world’s newest countries: so new that only 75 out of 192 UN member states recognise it as an independent country. As such, a visit here has an air of pioneering to it; nonetheless, it is certainly a revelatory experience as you sample this attractive yet controversial region.
Fashioned by centuries-old religious and cultural conflicts between Muslim and Orthodox Christian settlers, Kosovo enjoys some wonderfully distinct architecture amongst its pretty, rolling hills and wide plains. The beautiful 12th-century Gracanica monastery and Sinan Pasha Mosque are particular highlights.
A city break in Kosovo will take you to its bustling, regenerated capital city, Prishtina. A youthful city - the majority of the population are aged under 35 – with no shortage of international restaurants and bars, you certainly won’t be found wanting for entertainment. There are plenty of sights too to grant you a real insight and understanding into Kosovo’s turbulent history and unique way of life, such as the Independence Museum and Emin Gijku Ethnography Museum. Prishtina is also an ideal base from which to explore the pretty Kosovan countryside.
