Romania city breaks are often overlooked in favour of folkloric adventures to the mountains of Transylvania; however, this captivating country on the east of the Balkans has a lot more to offer than just vampires. Most city breaks in Romania centre on its expansive yet beautiful capital city, Bucharest. With its gigantic Communist structures muscling their way past stunning, well-preserved Belle Epoque architecture, it’s a contrasting metropolis that is likely to be distinct from anything you’ve seen before. The sprawling Parliament Palace is the second largest building in the world behind the Pentagon and marks Bucharest as a historical snapshot of dictatorial megalomania and excess. However, there are plenty more traditional sights to be seen too, such as the glorious old quarter, Lipscani, and excellent Village Museum which houses over 300 buildings representing Romania’s agricultural history.

Bucharest has all you’d expect of a European city break; its plethora of museums, cathedrals, churches, galleries and monuments ensure you will have enough to explore in the day, while  its opera houses, concert halls, vibrant nightlife and lively bar scene mean you won’t be found wanting for entertainment in the evenings. Look past its slightly unfavourable international reputation and Bucharest will reward you with a remarkably unique city break that will live long in the memory.
