From Tallinn, why not take a day trip to the western shore of Estonia? At Paldiski on the Pakri Peninsula, you can visit what was once a highly restricted military base. Now abandoned, you can explore the enormous 'Pentagon' complex, where the Soviet Union used to house its naval submarines.

Tallinn
Discover Tallinn, one of Europe's smallest cities, where the red roofs of the medieval city and maze of cobbled streets merge seamlessly with designer malls and gleaming skyscrapers, all observed imperiously by the hilltop Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Step back to the Soviet era at the Occupation Museum or to the reign of Peter the Great at his opulent, Baroque summer palace, Kadriorg Park. Pass the time people-watching from a table in the Old Town Square and indulge your taste buds in a range of international restaurants. Hit the high note at the Estonian National Opera or mingle with the hip crowd in any number of bars and clubs.
When to go..
Many celebrations take place throughout the year in Tallinn and the biggest festivals often have a strong Estonian theme. These events include the Estonian Music Days in April, and the Day of Tallinn each May. Since Tallinn has a fabulous Medieval Old Town, then don’t miss Tallinn’s Medieval Market in July, where craftsmen, traders, musicians and actors flock to the Old Town. People in costume create an authentic atmosphere, and there are concerts, workshops and children’s activities to enjoy.
