I know it sounds strange for a city break but for some quiet reflection visit the Mirogoj Cemetery in Zagreb. Lime-green cupolas top the wall that surrounds this beautiful tree-lined resting place. Inside flickering candles, flowers, sculptures and ornate stonework set the scene whilst Catholic, Orthodox and Muslim graves rest side by side.

Zagreb
Zabreb is a fun cosmopolitan capital city, but start in the thousand-year-old upper town, Gornji Grad, for all the highlights. Note the Presidential Palace, defended by colourful guards, and St Mark's Church with its exquisitely tiled roof. Descend in the funicular to the lower town and Ban Josip Jelacic Square, a masterpiece of Austro-Hungarian style. Snack at one of the kiosks in Dolac market before heading to Mirogoj Cemetery. Death is a serious business and you will be impressed by the ornate tombs and the beautiful surrounding park. Choose from a bewildering selection of cuisine before joining the party in the bars and clubs.
When to go
The Zagreb Summer Festival, held during July and August, sees the Croatian capital city overrun with music concerts and theatre performances. Many of the concerts take place in the open air and the public squares of the Upper Town. Many of Zagreb’s churches and religious buildings, such as the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Jesuit Church of St Catherine, also become temporary concert venues.
