I always recommend even in winter or summer take the local train from Riga Railway Station (watch our for pick pockets here though!) to Jurmala. This is Latvia's Riviera, where faded elegant wooden villas edge tree-lined streets guiding you to the wide, sandy beaches. The sea is sometimes frozen in the winter, which is an incredible sight to see!

Cesis City Breaks

Cēsis is considered by many to be the best preserved and most authentic example of the old, pre-war Latvia. With its labyrinthine narrow streets lined with humble, old, stone buildings and leisurely pace of life, a visit here is very much like stepping back into the past. The town makes for a wonderful stroll and there’s plenty to explore such as the crumbling castle ruins, the Vieinbas laukums square - shadowed by the eccentric Victory Monument, the 13th-century St Johns Church and the compelling Museum of History of Art. Cēsis also lies just 35km from Sigulda – known as the ‘Switzerland of Latvia’ – and is an ideal base from which to discover the beauty of the surrounding Baltic countryside.
