The Curonian Spit is one of the Baltic region’s most precious and impressive natural wonders and a must-see on any tour of Lithuania. This 97km-long shard of land is just a short ferry ride from Klaipeda but is like a different world with its undulating sand dunes covered with thick swathes of pine and birch trees and fascinating wildlife such as elk and whole colonies of herons and cormorants . With an extensive network of forest trails and cycle paths, the Spit is a wonderful place to explore on foot or by bike, and with the Lithuanian portion a manageable 35km long (the rest belongs to Kaliningrad) and 4km at its widest; this is a fantastic way to spend a day.The charming village of Nida is the Curonian Spit’s most popular destination for visitors.
