Hamhung City Breaks
Hamhung, the country’s second largest city after Pyongyang, is a fresh and intriguing part of any tour to North Korea having only opened to tourists in 2010. Situated on the East coast about a day’s drive from the capital, a stopover here is usually combined with a visit of the beautiful Mt. Kungang and the pleasant city of Wonsan. But Hamhung city itself has plenty going for it to warrant a full day’s sightseeing and, despite being a major industrial centre, is a surprisingly picturesque place with some prettily landscaped parks, a fine beach and impressive buildings such as the Hamhung Grand Theatre. Other things to do here include a visit to the Dongbong Co-Operative Farm, the Hungnam Fertilizer Complex and the historical Hamhung Bongung house where the founder of the Ri Dynasty once resided.
Hamhung is also an ideal base from which to explore the scenic Bujon region and magnificent Mt. Okryon on a daytrip.
