For those wanting a typical Russian experience vodka must be sampled at least once whilst travelling the Trans-Siberian. In a rare Health and Safety drive for Russia, vodka cannot be sold in or near train stations, so if you want to toast your entering (or leaving) Siberia, or enjoy a drink with new found friends make sure you have a bottle before heading for the train station!

Krasnoyarsk City Breaks
Krasnoyarsk is an energetic and attractive city snugly placed among scenic hills and cliffs by the Yenisey River and is well worth visiting while on a Trans-Siberian Railway trip. The city is perhaps best known in Russia as the birthplace of the artist Vasily Surikov whose grand works are displayed in the attractive Surikov Estate Museum and the Surikov Art Museum. Another must-see here is the Museum of Local Studies which houses some excellent exhibits including Christian and Buddhist relics and a full-size replica of a Cossack riverboat. The town itself also makes for a decent walk, especially in the older part where there are several interesting churches such as the Chapel of St Parasceva Pyatnitsa which features on the 10 Rouble note and provides excellent views of the city.
