Pyongyang City Breaks
Pyongyang, the capital of DPRK with its concrete high-rise apartment blocks along wide empty tree-lined boulevards remains a true Stalinist legacy. Socialist Monuments abound, mostly named after the Great Leader; Kim Il Sung Square, Kim Il Sung Stadium and Kim Il Sung University. Visit the tower of Juche, a 170 metre needle dedicated to Kim Il Sung's Juche ideology. The North Koreans' devotion to their former leader does not stop here. Dominating a huge plaza overlooking the Taedong River, is the Grand Monument, a huge bronze statue of the great leader, flanked by statues of workers, peasants and soldiers. Local people come here to pay homage to him daily.
The Pyongyang metro system is another fine example of socialist design with cavernous marble-clad stations decorated with murals of workers and illuminated by crystal chandeliers. The Taesongsan Park, a large national park located on the edge of Pyongyang, is home to the Mausoleum of Revolutionary Martyrs and the Kwangbop Buddhist Temple.
