Overlooked by many visitors, it is well worth investing a couple of days of time exploring Tashkent. Whilst it does not have the rich history of Samarkand or Khiva, the wide-avenues, attractive parks and interesting markets are well worth a look in, affording a cosmopolitan contrast to the historical silk road cities.

Tashkent City Breaks

On first viewing Tashkent appears to hide its charms, but with a little effort you will discover that its location on the old Silk Road means it is steeped in history. Rebuilding has left little of the ancient city, but the small Old Town is still worth a visit with its narrow winding alleys. Look past the monstrous Soviet-era architecture and you will discover ancient mausoleums and imposing madrassas. Climb up to the observation deck of the TV tower and discover a city that is remarkably green and attractive. Break the ice by joining the locals in a cup of tea – a favourite tipple.
