I must admit it is true the Sacher Torte is the best chocolate cake I have ever tasted! I was sceptical but there is something so decadent about that dark sponge and apricot jam centre! Created by Franz Sacher in 1832 - it is only available in Vienna or Salzburg but is a true Viennese speciality.

Vienna City Breaks

Vienna, Austria's imperial capital city is famous for its cultural events and has a world-wide reputation as a city of music, with first class orchestras and ensembles performing the works of renowned composers such as Mozart, Strauss and Schubert throughout the year. With fifty theatres, four opera houses and a hundred museums including The Museum Quarter (being home to one of the biggest cultural districts in Europe), you will not be short of things to do. Vienna's prime landmarks are the Gothic St Stephen's Cathedral, the Giant Ferris Wheel in Praterpark and the Spanish Riding School, with its world-famous Lippizan Horses. Not to be missed are the stunning palaces of Schonbrunn and Belvedere and no visit to Vienna would be complete without indulging in a pastry or two in one of the city's many cosy coffee houses.

When to Go...

There are endless things to do on a short break to Vienna, with a year-round choice of festivals, regardless of the time that you choose to visit. The Vienna Festival (Wiener Festwochen) is a particular highlight and this popular event takes place each year in May and June. Vienna is the only city in the world where balls still dominate the social calendar during the winter season, and a Viennese ball is a unique opportunity to experience the sophisticated charm of the city and the famous Viennese waltz. The official ball season offers about 300 public balls for every taste and pocket. The season officially lasts from New Year's Eve until Ash Wednesday the following year, but balls can occur up until June
