My favourite restaurant in Vilnius is Lokys located in the old town. This medieval restaurant set in Gothic cellars serves up delicious meals such as boar and venison. In the summer the terrace is a pleasant area to sit and relax. Not the cheapest restaurant but the quality has always been excellent, when I have visited!

Vilnius City Breaks

Discover unspoiled winding streets and a church on every corner in the picturesque Baroque Old Town. Take the funicular from the Lower to the Higher Castle for views across the rooftops. To learn more of the recent history pay a visit to the Museum of Genocide Victims in the former KGB headquarters. Many of the best eateries and watering holes are tucked away in the alleys of the Old Town but head for up-and-coming Snipiskes for fashionable bars and clubs. Check out what's on at the Congress Palace or look out for some fun street theatre.

Vilnius's brand new National Gallery of Art brings alive Lithuanian art from the 20th and 21st centuries. Even if art isn't your 'thing', make time to view the works influenced by the Second World War and Soviet occupation and the collection of artworks by Lithuanian exiles.

When to go...

Established in May 1997, the Vilnius Festival brings the best in classical music from across Europe and beyond to the Lithuanian capital. With a dozen concerts and productions, it has become one of the mainstays of the city's annual programme. Besides the Argentines and the French, the Lithuanians are also known for their killer tango. The annual Baltic Tango Festival in Vilnius in June is the perfect place to watch this passionate dance. Capital Days (Sostines dienos) is the official festival of Vilnius and the most spectacular fiesta in the city. Established in 1993, the open-air event takes place in squares and parks throughout the city, in particular Cathedral Square and Vingis Park.
