When I visited Yasnaya Polyana during a recent trip to Moscow, it was obvious why this was Tolstoy's favourite place from where he wrote his masterpieces. Even during a visit there in the 21st century, you can't help to be taken aback by the peace and tranquillity of its idyllic setting, with its avenues of birch trees, dense woodland and expansive lakes. Tolstoy's house itself was wonderfully preserved and you could almost feel his literary presence there with you!

Russia City Breaks
St Petersburg: 3 night City Breaks in St Petersburg from £425
Make for Nevsky Prospekt, a good starting point to discover many of the highlights of this city of opulent palaces and sparkling waterways. The Hermitage could absorb all of your time, but don’t miss imposing Peter and Paul Fortress, St Isaac’s Cathedral and the battleship Aurora, the launchpad of the Russian Revolution. Hunt for Communist kitsch in the Souvenir Market, savour vodka and caviar or a blini from a corner kiosk and get a new perspective of the city from a canal trip. Canal-side haunts are fun in the evening or take in a performance at the opulent Mariinsky Theatre.
All our St Petersburg city break prices include 3 nights accommodation with breakfast, return flights in economy class and all airport taxes.
