Holidays
in Croatia and the Balkans - Tour Itineraries
A
10 day fly-drive tour featuring Split, Hvar,
Pula, Zadar and more from £849 per personDriving
in Croatia is a wonderful experience because in the south, roads snake through
mountain passes or follow the winding coastline through fishing villages, historic
towns, nature reserves and secluded coves, while in the north drive through green
plains dotted with castles and covered in vineyards. This suggested individual
itinerary takes in one of the prettiest parts of the Adriatic - Istria. The pristine
shoreline is stunning but the interior is equally worthwhile, with its green hills,
valleys and medieval mountain villages - the perfect points to enjoy panoramic
views.

the many bays and beaches that make this one of the favourite holiday destinations
for Croatians and foreigners alike | | Day
4 | SPLIT TO PLITVICE LAKES Drive through
gentle mountains to Plitvice, where you will be surprised by the diversity of
the landscape, more 'European' than Mediterranean. The national park is extremely
green and the air is fresh. Overnight in Plitvice. | | Day
5 | PLITVICE LAKES NATIONAL PARK
TO RIJEKA Free day to explore Plitvice Lakes, walk in the wooded hills
and admire the 16 turquoise lakes and 92 waterfalls. This will be a relaxing 'nature'
day for you to wander around the National park and take a boat on the lakes. In
the afternoon drive to Rijeka, the third biggest city in Croatia and a very busy
port town - ferries and boats of all shape and size fill the harbour. Walk along
the tree-lined promenade and head to Trsat Castle to enjoy the view on the city
in the summer cool of the Maestral. Overnight in Rijeka. | | Day
6 | RIJEKA TO PULA In the morning, drive
to the hilly region of Istria and stop in Motovun, a fascinating Venetian fortified
town, before continuing on to Groznjan, another Venetian treasure with an arty
atmosphere - the studios and musical centres come alive throughout the summer
with concerts and festivals. Reach Porec (88 Kilometres) with its Roman architecture
and the Euphrasian Basilica, one of the finest examples of Byzantine art before
continuing on to Rovinj, a small, pretty fishing town with a delightful Old Town
of narrow cobbled streets. Continue south to one of the most stunning sights in
the Istrian peninsula, the Limska Draga Fjord, which was created during the last
Ice Age. Arrive in Pula. Check-in hotel in Pula for 2 nights. |
| Day 7 | PULA
Today explore Pula with its Roman remains such as the amphitheatre which is now
the centre of the lively summer entertainment and cultural activities. Drive in
the surrounding area or enjoy the sunshine on the Premantura Peninsula - head
to Debeljak, one of the area's rare sandy beaches. | | Day
8 | PULA TO ZADAR Stop in Labin en route
to Opatija (93 Kilometres) and walk around the Old Town, which will inspire you
with yet more Venetian architecture and tiny craft shops. Reach Opatija and visit
St. Jacob's Church, built on the foundations of a Benedictine Abbey. After lunch
drive along the breath-taking coastline to Zadar, in northern Dalmatia (248 Kilometres).
This is a typical laid-back Mediterranean walled town, with its romantic harbour
and white stone-paved streets, a-la-mode cafes and ancient landmarks. Overnight
in Zadar. | | Day 9 | ZADAR
TO TROGIR You can stop to Krka National Park after a further walk around
Zadar and admire the famous waterfalls before heading to Sibenik and Trogir, two
little gems - you might think you landed on the set of a film, where every corner
is full of character and locals are 'busy' resting in the shade in the central
hours of the day. The smell of freshly baked bread fills the tiny cobbled streets
and melts with the salty marine breeze. Try the superb fresh seafood dishes and
local white wine. Overnight in Trogir. | | Day
10 | TROGIR TO SPLIT After a further walk
in Trogir, head to Split airport for your flight back to the UK. |
