8 day fly-drive holiday tour around South West Iceland
with optional activities
This
fly-drive holiday explores the South West of Iceland
driving south from Reykjavik in the southwest and
visiting all the main attractions that this region
can offer. Accommodation is with FossHotel, a chain
of 11 Tourist Class Hotels situated around Iceland,
ranging from Summer Hotels, used as schools during
the Winter, to 3 Star properties. Accommodation will
be offered in the area mentioned at a FossHotel or
similar accommodation.
Note:
It might not be possible at all times, to visit sights
or to take part in all of the optional activities
mentioned. These itineraries are only suggestions
and not a full and detailed description of all attractions
available en-route. A good guide book is essential
when touring Iceland.

UK/Iceland.

Collect car hire on arrival at Keflavik International
Airport. Overnight Reykjavik: FossHotel or similar.

|
SOUTHERN
REGION
Spend the day exploring Iceland's 'Golden
Circle': Drive to the mighty Gullfoss
Waterfall where the water from the river
'Hvita' violently drops
some 32m into a deep meandering gorge. Geysir,
here among the numerous hot springs and mud pools,
you will find the world's most active geyser 'Strokkur'
which is likely to spout for you to heights of 20
m. Thingvellir National Park
a most stunningly beautiful area, flanked by snow
covered peaks and home to Iceland's largest Lake,
'Thingvallavatn'. A place where a wealth of natural
attractions can be found, and where the Great Atlantic
Rift is clearly visible. The next three nights will
be spent in the Southern Countryside. Overnight
Nesjavellir: FossHotel Nesbud or similar.

SOUTHERN
REGION
Spend the day exploring further Iceland's spectacular
southern region. Beyond the 'Golden Circle' are
a wealth of attractions the highlights of which
include; Thjorsardalur Valley
dominated by the celebrated volcano Mt. Hekla, the
beautiful Seljalandsfoss
and Skogafoss Waterfalls
and Myrdalsjokull Glacier.
Other options [4WD needed] include the spectacular
Thorsmork Nature Reserve, a forested glacial valley,
surrounded by snow peaks and glaciers along with
the fascinating colourful region of Landmannalaugar
with its trademark rhyolite mountains.

Activity: Snowmobile Ride On Myrdalsjokull Glacier.

REYKJANES
PENINSULA & THE BLUE LAGOON
Explore the Reykjanes Peninsula,
visit the famous Blue Lagoon
with time to relax and enjoy a bathe in its bright
blue mineral rich geothermally heated waters. Visit
the picturesque fishing village of Grindavik
and the geothermal area of Krisuvik
with its steamholes and bubbling mud pools. Then
onto the Greenhouse Village of Hveragerdi
where abundant geothermal energy is used for growing
fruits, vegetables and flowers.

Activity: Bathing in the Blue Lagoon. |

BORGARFJORDUR DISTRICT
Drive West via Hvalfjordur Fjord through the lush
farmlands to where the Borgarfjordur
District and Snaefellsnes Peninsula awaits
for a stay of two nights. Another option would
be to drive the Kaldidalur Mountain Road F550.
[Note:4WD Vehicle needed and the pass is normally
closed to traffic until mid June].
Overnight Bifrost: FossHotel Bifrost or similar.

INAEFELLSNES
PENINSULA
The 100 Km long Snaefellsnes
Peninsula and the Breidafjordur
Bay area with its rich birdlife are among
the 'must see' locations in Iceland. Highlights
include the unusual rock formations at Arnarstapi.
The majestic Snaefellsjokull
Glacier, the fishing villages of Hellissandur,
Grundarfjordur and Stykkisholmur.
Optional
Activities:
Whale Watching From Olafsvik Harbour.
Snowmobile Ride On Snaefellsjokull Glacier.
Breidafjordur Bird & Island Cruise From Stykkisholmur.

7 |
REYKJAVIK
Return to Iceland's Capital Reykjavik,
via the scenic Hvalfjordur
[Whale Fjord] North of Mt. Esja. Spend the rest
of the day in Reykjavik, shopping in town or sightseeing.
Overnight Reykjavik: FossHotel or similar.
Optional
Activity: Whale Watching Boat Safari from Reykjavik
