Riga, the capital of Latvia, is the
largest and most cosmopolitan of the three Baltic capitals
but very few people even know where the country is situated.
After decades of isolation as part of
the Soviet Union, Latvia finally gained independence
in 1991 and since then it has built on the natural energy
of its people to establish a western-facing democracy
and put the country on the tourist map.
Riga celebrated its 800th year in 2001
- the restoration work on the Old Town has enhanced
an already unique area and life has been injected with
the arrival of many street cafés.
You will also find
one of the largest collections of classic art nouveau
buildings in Europe. Elsewhere lovers of castles will
enjoy exploring Cesis and Sigulda and the enchanting
Rundale Palace, designed by the architect of the Hermitage
in St Petersburg.
