Holidays in Slovenia - The Balkans - Tour Itineraries

A 12 day fly-drive holiday in Slovenia featuring lakes, castles and cities from £955 per person

This new fly-drive includes Slovenian highlights such as Lakes Bled and Bohinj, Piran and the capital city, Ljubljana. You will drive through stunning landscapes from the lakes to the Julian Alps, from the coast to the wine region of East Slovenia and visit cultural gems such as Maribor and Ptuj.

We have used good three and four star hotels and group A car hire, although air-conditioned group B cars can be arranged for a small supplement.

Suggested Itinerary
Day 1 FLY TO LJUBLJANA
Fly to Ljubljana and drive to Bled (25 kilometres). Check in for 2 nights. There may be time to swim in the warm lake waters!
Day 2 LAKE BLED & LAKE BOHINJ
Walk around the emerald-green lake, visit the 11th century Bled castle and go on a pletna boat ride to the island in the middle of the lake. We recommend a visit to nearby Lake Bohinj, the beautiful glacier lake and quieter destination which will also suit culture lovers, with plenty of museums and churches in the area as well as the Savica Waterfall.
Day 3 BLED TO PORTOROZ VIA KOBARID
Drive to Portoroz through the Vrsic Pass (250 kilometres). Described in Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms, Kobarid offers an interesting Historical Walk departing from the Kobarid Museum. Drive south via Nova Gorica to the stunning Karst region of limestone pavements, rivers and lakes to Portoroz. Check-in for 2 nights.
Day 4

PIRAN
Leave your car in the municipal car park south of the bus station and explore this fine example of Venetian Gothic architecture and narrow alleys. Here, the fish is the freshest in Slovenia and there is also a lovely little beach less than 1 kilometre away, called Fiesa, which you can reach on foot. You can even walk to Piran from Portoroz via St Bernardin, following the coastline – it will take about 40 minutes.

Day 5

PORTOROZ TO LJUBLJANA VIA POSTOJNA CAVE
Drive to Ljubljana (150 kilometres). A stop at Postojna Cave is a must for nature lovers – visit the karst cave or head to the less-visited and equally amazing Skocjan cave. Predjama Castle is set in one of the most breath-taking locations halfway up a hillside in a cavern. Finally reach the capital city and check-in Hotel City for 2 nights.

Day 6

LJUBLJANA
Visit the Medieval Old Town and market, where you can shop for fresh fruit or typical crafts and enjoy the laidback atmosphere of the cafés and restaurants along the Ljubljanica River. You can also take a walk up to the castle.

Day 7 MARIBOR
Depart for Maribor (130 kilometres), a pretty city on the Drava River. There are many historical wine cellars dating back to the 19th century and covering some 20,000 sq metres underground, where you can taste the famous wines of the region. Explore the city’s treasures such as the castle and National Liberation Museum. Overnight stay at Hotel Orel.
Day 8 MARIBOR TO BANOVCI VIA PTUJ
Drive through the hilly eastern area to Banovci (65 kilometres) and stop in Ptuj for a short tour of this lovely ancient town. The castle, monasteries and medieval sites will not fail to impress you. Arrive in Banovci and check-in at Terme Banovci for overnight stay. Do not miss the amazing saunas in the hotel before dinner.
Day 9 BANOVCI TO SMARJEVSKE TOPLICE
Drive to Smarjevske Toplice (160 kilometres) via Ptuj and Celje, perhaps stopping for a short sightseeing tour and a coffee. Check-in at the superior four-star spa Hotel Vitarium for 2 nights on half board basis. Here you can take advantage of the spa facilities and swimming pools at the hotel after your day's driving.
Day 10 DOLENJSKA REGION AND NOVO MESTO
Smarjev ske Toplice is the perfect base to explore the surrounding area's castles, monasteries and old historical towns along the Krka River, like Novo mesto (with its lovely, small Old Town) and the hilly countryside of the south-east area towards the border with Croatia.
Day 11 NOVO MESTO TO LJUBLJANA
Drive to Ljubljana (75 kilometres) and stop to visit Sticna Abbey, the oldest monastery in Slovenia. Check-in hotel for overnight stay.
Day 12 FLY TO UK
Free morning depending on time of flight, drive to airport and drop off car. Fly to the UK.
