holiday in Slovenia featuring lakes, castles and cities

This new fly-drive
includes Slovenian highlights such as Lakes Bled and
Bohinj, Piran and the capital city, Ljubljana. You will
drive through stunning landscapes from the lakes to
the Julian Alps, from the coast to the wine region of
East Slovenia and visit cultural gems such as Maribor
and Ptuj.
We have used good three and four star
hotels and group A car hire, although air-conditioned
group B cars can be arranged for a small supplement.

| Day 1 |
FLY TO LJUBLJANA
Fly to Ljubljana and drive to Bled (25 kilometres).
Check in for 2 nights. There may be time to swim
in the warm lake waters! |
| Day 2 |
LAKE BLED & LAKE BOHINJ
Walk around the emerald-green lake, visit the 11th
century Bled castle and go on a pletna boat ride
to the island in the middle of the lake. We recommend
a visit to nearby Lake Bohinj, the beautiful glacier
lake and quieter destination which will also suit
culture lovers, with plenty of museums and churches
in the area as well as the Savica Waterfall. |
| Day 3 |
BLED TO PORTOROZ VIA KOBARID
Drive to Portoroz through the Vrsic Pass (250 kilometres).
Described in Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms, Kobarid
offers an interesting Historical Walk departing
from the Kobarid Museum. Drive south via Nova Gorica
to the stunning Karst region of limestone pavements,
rivers and lakes to Portoroz. Check-in for 2 nights. |
| Day 4 |
PIRAN
Leave your car in the municipal car park south
of the bus station and explore this fine example
of Venetian Gothic architecture and narrow alleys.
Here, the fish is the freshest in Slovenia and
there is also a lovely little beach less than
1 kilometre away, called Fiesa, which you can
reach on foot. You can even walk to Piran from
Portoroz via St Bernardin, following the coastline
it will take about 40 minutes.

| Day 5 |
PORTOROZ TO LJUBLJANA VIA
POSTOJNA CAVE
Drive to Ljubljana (150 kilometres). A stop at
Postojna Cave is a must for nature lovers
visit the karst cave or head to the less-visited
and equally amazing Skocjan cave. Predjama Castle
is set in one of the most breath-taking locations
halfway up a hillside in a cavern. Finally reach
the capital city and check-in Hotel City for 2
nights.

| Day 6 |
LJUBLJANA
Visit the Medieval Old Town and market, where
you can shop for fresh fruit or typical crafts
and enjoy the laidback atmosphere of the cafés
and restaurants along the Ljubljanica River. You
can also take a walk up to the castle.

| Day 7 |
MARIBOR
Depart for Maribor (130 kilometres), a pretty city
on the Drava River. There are many historical wine
cellars dating back to the 19th century and covering
some 20,000 sq metres underground, where you can
taste the famous wines of the region. Explore the
citys treasures such as the castle and National
Liberation Museum. Overnight stay at Hotel Orel. |
| Day 8 |
MARIBOR TO BANOVCI VIA PTUJ
Drive through the hilly eastern area to Banovci
(65 kilometres) and stop in Ptuj for a short tour
of this lovely ancient town. The castle, monasteries
and medieval sites will not fail to impress you.
Arrive in Banovci and check-in at Terme Banovci
for overnight stay. Do not miss the amazing saunas
in the hotel before dinner. |
| Day 9 |
BANOVCI TO SMARJEVSKE TOPLICE
Drive to Smarjevske Toplice (160 kilometres) via
Ptuj and Celje, perhaps stopping for a short sightseeing
tour and a coffee. Check-in at the superior four-star
spa Hotel Vitarium for 2 nights on half board basis.
Here you can take advantage of the spa facilities
and swimming pools at the hotel after your day's
driving. |
| Day 10 |
DOLENJSKA REGION AND NOVO
MESTO
Smarjev ske Toplice is the perfect base to explore
the surrounding area's castles, monasteries and
old historical towns along the Krka River, like
Novo mesto (with its lovely, small Old Town) and
the hilly countryside of the south-east area towards
the border with Croatia. |
| Day 11 |
NOVO MESTO TO LJUBLJANA
Drive to Ljubljana (75 kilometres) and stop to visit
Sticna Abbey, the oldest monastery in Slovenia.
Check-in hotel for overnight stay. |
| Day 12 |
FLY TO UK
Free morning depending on time of flight, drive
to airport and drop off car. Fly to the UK. |
