Whilst in Sarajevo make sure you sample the delicious Bosnian cuisine on offer at the restaurant Pod Lipom located in Baščaršija. There are several tables outside where you can taste cevapi – tasty spicy sausages served with onions in warm pitta bread - an ideal snack after a day snow-shoeing up the Bijelasnica Highlands!

Bosnia-Herzegovina Tours

Sarajevo & Belgrade Twin Centre By Train 2012

Visiting:  Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia
Sarajevo & Belgrade Twin Centre By Train 2012

Highlights: 7 day tour

After 18 years, the train line from Sarajevo to Belgrade is running again and this short break enables you to spend a few nights in each capital city, making the historical train journey between.

Price from: £695 pp

This train line was historically one of the few physical links that bound Muslims, Serbs and Croats. Almost the entire railway network in Bosnia was rendered unusable during the 1992-1995 war and is now only just in operation once more.

However, whilst the route may seem straight forward the journey is somewhat of an adventure as in the still fragmented region of the former Yugoslavia it now requires four different locomotives from four separate railway companies, two passport checks and more than eight hours to journey about 300 miles.

Sarajevo has a fascinating history, nestled between wooded hills and divided by the babbling river Miljacka, in the centre of Bosnia Herzegovina. The Bascarsija is the main market square, and the hub of the inner city with over 40 narrow lanes emanating from it - these lanes are filled with traders in copper, leather and woodwork. In the market you can buy carved wooden toys and handmade tin coffee pots and cups. Sarajevo is packed with places of worship. The neo-Gothic Roman Catholic Cathedral dates from 1889. The Jewish museum was a synagogue when it was built in 1556. A nearby Orthodox church has been there since 1539

Belgrade is now firmly back where it belongs, at the heart of Europe. Fortunately, the sole evidence now of its many conquerors and former despots is in its architecture. Name a style from the 17th century or from the 20th century, and it will be there. Yet Belgrade is more than just its buildings; the Danube and its hilly surroundings are as important as the city itself. The Old Town is compact enough for walking everywhere and cars are banned from many of its streets to ensure this is enjoyable.
