Journey to the peaceful land of Laos and discover a country with a rich heritage and a relaxed pace of life. Explore scenic Luang Prabang encircled by mountain ranges and home to many temples and pagodas before travelling off-the-beaten- track to puzzle over the source of the mysterious Plain of Jars. Travel south to Pakse and board a luxury boat to cruise the southern waterways, explore the magnificent 4,000 islands and discover remote Laotian life.
Arrive Luang Prabang and transfer to the Hotel 3 Nagas. The rest of the day is free to relax or explore at leisure.
Hotel 3 Nagas
Rise early this morning and enjoy the alms procession, a deeply spiritual ceremony that highlights the spiritual nature of the Laos people. After breakfast at the hotel, enjoy a city tour which includes visits to the Royal Palace which is now the National Museum, Wat Mai and iconic Wat Xieng Thong, the most revered temple in the city. After lunch, visit Wat Visoun and the Arts & Ethnology Centre and climb the 328 steps to the top of Mount Phousi for a stunning sunset. Stroll through the evening market for a spot of souvenir shopping. (B,L)
This morning travel up the Mekong to the Pak Ou Caves which are filled with thousands of gold-lacquered Buddha statues which range in size. Return to Luang Prabang and after lunch in a local restaurant, drive to the Khuang Si Waterfalls for a dip in the cooling pools. A walk to the top of the falls is an option and there is a Bear Sanctuary located nearby which is worth a visit. (B,L)
This morning leave the city behind and head into the countryside towards Xieng Khuang. This is a long journey so stops will be made and lunch served on the way. Arrive Xieng Khuang and check into the Vansana Hotel. Enjoy a brief city tour and visit the MAG Centre, an international organisation clearing the remains of the war in Laos. (B,L)
This morning journey through Phonsavan and the intriguing Plain of Jars, a huge archaeological complex littered with 2000 year old stone jars of varying sizes. Their true origins remains a mystery. The jars are spread over three sites and there is time to visit them all as well as some local villages. After lunch in Phonsavan enjoy a visit to Muang Khoun, home to a unique sitting giant Buddha. Return to Xieng Khuang and overnight. (B,L)
This morning fly to Vientiane, the 'city of sandalwood'. Land and drive to the Ansara Hotel. The remainder of the day is at leisure. (B)
Today enjoy a full day tour of Vientiane. Visits include Wat Sisaket and Wat Phra Keo which is used as a religious museum. Pay a visit to COPE, an association working to help landmine victims. Visit Patuxay Monument and enjoy panoramic views of the city. After lunch head to the unusual Buddha Park which is located in the countryside and filled with over 200 Buddhist and Hindu statues. Return to the city with stops on the way to visit an outlet specialising in high quality Laos silk. (B,L)
Fly to Pakse on an early flight and drive to the Athena Hotel. Enjoy a short orientation tour of the town after which depart for the Bolaven Plateau. This area is home to many hilltribes and coffee plantations and the Tad Lo waterfalls, an impressive three-tier falls. After lunch visit Tad Fane and Tad Yuang waterfalls formed by the merging waters of the Champy and Pak Koot Rivers. Return to Pakse with a stop en-route to enjoy some of the excellent Laos coffee. This morning join the other cruise members for the start of the Vat Phou Cruise. Board a longtail boat and travel to Champasak where the cruise boat is waiting. Enjoy lunch onboard after which, head out to visit Wat Phou, the spectacular pre-Angkorian temples sitting among the rice fields. Visit Champasak before returning to the boat to enjoy a drink at sunset while the boat docks for the night near a remote village. Overnight onboard. (B,L,D)
Enjoy breakfast onboard while cruising to the village of HouayTomo to visit the forest temple of Oum Muang. Rejoin the boat for lunch and cruise to the 4000 islands, a very beautiful place along the Laos/Cambodian border which has thousands of islands. Enjoy dinner and overnight onboard. (B,L,D)
Breakfast is served on deck while cruising to Ban Veuthong before disembarking and taking a longtail boat to explore Don Det and Khone Island. Check-out of the Vat Phou Cruise boat and head to the mainland for lunch. Drive back to Pakse, with stops en-route, for the night at leisure in the Athena Hotel. (B,L)
This morning drive to Pakse airport and take the flight to Bangkok. Change carriers and return to the UK. (B)

Vat Phou Cruise
The Vat Phou Cruise was originally a ferry used to carry teak wood between Vientiane and southern Laos and in 1993 was converted into a luxurious floating hotel cruising the Mekong River. The boat offers just 12 twin-share cabins, 10 on the lower deck and just 2 on the upper deck, all equipped with en-suite bathroom and air-conditioning. There is also an air-conditioned dining room on the lower deck and a bar and 2 shaded areas on the upper deck.
The Vat Phou boat is a 34 metre long, 7.5 metre wide steel hulled teak barge, equipped with two 260 HP Isuzu diesel engine. The design of the boat retains a character that is unmistakably oriental and enables you to relax in comfort while you cruise the Mekong andenjoy the views of river scenery and life as you pass smoothly by.
