From the welcoming capital of Tbilisi, delve deep into the country to explore the monasteries, museums, caves and plethora of other fascinating sights - including the birthplace of Joseph Stalin - of Signangi, Telavi, Ushguli, Mestia, Gori and Svaneti, before spending 3 nights in the wonderfully relaxing seaside town of Batumi. Arrive Tbilisi, transfer to hotel for 2 nights.
Today, enjoy a full day sightseeing in Tbilisi including the Sulphur Bathhouses (exterior only), Sioni Cathedral, Anchiskhati Basilica, Rustaveli Avenue and the Janashia State Museum. (B,L,D)
Depart Tbilisi in the morning for an excursion to eastern Georgia, heading to Lavra and Udabno. In the afternoon, enjoy a walking tour of Signagi followed by wine tasting in the “Pheasant’s Tears” restaurant. Transfer to hotel in Signagi and check in for 1 night. (B,L,D)
Head to Telavi, visiting the Bodbe Nunnery Complex, Nekresi Monastery, Gremi Architectural Complex and Tsinandali Family Estate. Transfer to hotel in Telavi and check in for 1 night. (B,L,D)
Continue sightseeing in eastern Georgia, visiting Alaverdi, Akalto Academy, Shuamta Monastery and the Palace of Erekle the 2nd before returning to your hotel in Tbilisi for a 1 night stay. (B,L,D)
Depart Tbilisi, spending the day driving west to Georgia’s second city, Kutaisi. En route, visit Jvari Church and Svetitskhoveli in Mtskheta. On arrival in Kutaisi visit the nearby Bagrat Cathedral and Gelati Monastery. In the afternoon, enjoy a walking tour of Kutaisi. Check into a guesthouse in the city for 1 night. (B,L,D)
Depart Kutatisi and visit the Sataplia caves before driving to Zugdidi, near the de facto Abkhazian border. Ascend the Enguri Gorge to Svaneti – a region very different from the rest of Georgia, being relatively isolated within the high Caucasus. On arrival in Mestia, the provincial capital, check into the Hotel Svaneti for 3 nights. Late this afternoon or early evening, enjoy an introductory walking tour of the town followed by dinner at the hotel. (B,L,D)
Depart for a day trip from Mestia to Ushguli, one of the highest settlements in Europe. En route we will pass through and stop at various small villages, taking in the stunning scenery of the region. In Ushguli you will have time to explore and take a picnic lunch at a suitable spot. (B,L,D)
Today, spend the full day in and around Mestia. This will include visits to the Mestia Ethnographical Museum, a Svan dwelling tower and Lagami Church. In the afternoon, enjoy some free time to explore the area at your leisure; your Georgian guide will be able to make suggestions and recommendations on what to do. Dinner at the Hotel Mestia in the evening. (B,L,D)
This morning, descend from the heights of the Caucasus to the Black Sea coast, spending the day driving to the attractive coastal city of Batumi. After lunch in or near Zugdidi, head onto Batumi and check into your hotel for 2 nights. Later this afternoon, take an introductory walking tour of the city. Dinner this evening will be in a local restaurant in Batumi. (B,L,D)
Enjoy a half day of sightseeing in and around Batumi, including Batumi Agricultural Market, Gonio Fortress, the Botanical Garden and Nobel’s Museum. After lunch in a local restaurant, rest of day free to explore at your leisure. (B,L)
Depart Batumi and head to Bakuriani. En route, visit a potter’s house and the Ubisi Basilica. Check into hotel in Bakuriani for 1 night. (B,L,D)
Return to Tbilisi, visiting the Timotesubani Cathedral, Stalin’s Museum in Gori – the birthplace of Stalin – and the cave town of Uplistsikhe. On arrival back in Tbilisi, check into your hotel for 3 nights (B,L,D)
Morning visit to the Trinity Cathedral, National Gallery and Flea Market. This brief excursion will end before lunch, and the rest of the day is free at leisure to explore the city. (B)
From Tbilisi, enjoy a daytrip to Lower Kartli and visit the Bolnisi Cathedral and the Dmanisi Archeological site. Return to Tbilisi for a final farewell dinner before tomorrow’s early departure. (B,L,D)
