Nuuk Short Break

4 Day Tour, from £1995 per person

Stay in the smallest and most northernmost capital in the world on this short break to Nuuk. Nestled on the banks of a huge fjord system and with a dramatic mountain range as a backdrop, Nuuk is a great place for a city break with a difference. Here, explore Arctic nature, as well as everyday life in one of the northernmost capitals in the world.
Greenland's capital has good restaurants, lots of shopping possibilities and one of our favourite Greenland museums - Greenland National Museum and Archives. This museum is located in the historic harbour and tells the history of Greenland  from the Inuit to the settlers. One of the most fascinating exhibitions is the remarkable mummies from Qilakitsoq - these preserved bodies were found in a remote cave near Uummannaq in North Greenland in 1971 and date from 1475.

DAY 2
NUUK CITY TOUR
National Costumes - Photo credit@Peter Lindstrom - Visit Greenland

After a hearty Greenlandic breakfast at the hotel, meet your local guide for a 3-hour walking tour of Nuuk. It includes a visit to the National Museum of Nuuk. One of the highlights are the Mummies of Qilakitsoq, found in 1972 by two brothers out hunting up north near the town of Uummannaq. Looking underneath the shelter of a rock, they found eight freeze-dried mummies. They are amazingly intact, even though they are about 600 years old. Four of these mummies are on display at the museum, where you can also see Greenland national costumes and learn about Greenland’s history.
This walking tour also takes in the rest of the old colonial harbour, including the statue of The Mother of the Sea and the Parliament. The tour ends at Greenland’s Cultural House, Katuaq, where you can enjoy a tapas lunch made with local specialities. After lunch, walk to a local home (around 15mins) and enjoy a Kaffe-mik - coffee and cakes. Return to the centre and enjoy some free time browsing Nuuk's unique shops such as Anori Art at the Nuuk Centre. Anori Art sells Greenlandic, handmade souvenirs, and other more traditional items such as T-shirts. (B, L)

Take in the vastness of the fjord while keeping a lookout for whales, seals, and white-tailed eagles. Then enjoy some fishing for code or redfish, before arriving at  Qooqqut - an abandoned settlement, where there is a small restaurant run by locally renowned check Mads Bek and his wife. Even though it's one of the world's most remote restaurants, the kitchen skilfully mixes Far Eastern spices and European cuisine. In the village they grow everything they need - vegetables, cabbage, and herbs. Enjoy the freshly cooked fish you caught or choose dinner from their regular menu. (B,D)
