Price from: £2010 pp
Beautifully situated in the heart of Greenland's spectacular Disko Bay region, some 200km north of the Arctic Circle, lies Ilulissat, known as the 'Town of the Icebergs'. So called as it sits at the mouth of the UNESCO designated Ilulissat Ice Fjord which is filled with gigantic icebergs produced by one of the most productive glaciers in the world. With ear-splitting roars they are constantly calving, making giant waves as they crash into the sea.
The following Excursions can be pre-booked or booked locally with the Destination Guide on arrival.
I1: City Walk in Ilulissat - Ilulissat means iceberg in Greenlandic and this town is situated in a beautiful location at the mouth of the 56km long ice fiord and filled with enormous icebergs. As we take a stroll through both old and new Ilulissat with our guide, we learn about the town’s history and see the ancient buildings that date back to the start of the Danish Trading Station, the bustling harbour, the old church and the museum. Lunch is held at a local restaurant.
Duration: Approx.4 Hours. Price: DKK 400 Including Lunch. (Approx. £50.00)
I2: The Icebergs of Sermermiut - We travel by bus as far as the road goes. We then take a walk alongside the beautiful UNESCO designated Ilulissat Ice Fiord to Sermermiut where it is still possible to see traces of the old Eskimo cultures. Sermermiut is a fertile valley next to the Ice Fiord where we can marvel at the fantastic icebergs and enjoy the flowers that grow there.
Duration: Approx. 3 Hours. Price: DKK 300 Including Refreshment. (Approx. £37.50)
I3: Hunter’s Settlement - Rodebay. We sail to the small settlement of Oqaitsut/Rodebay with a local population of approximately 40 inhabitants, who are totally dependent upon fishing and hunting - quite a different world compared to the nearby town of Ilulissat! We take a walk with our guide through the village before stopping for lunch at the old trading station.
Duration: Approx. 6 Hours. Price: DKK 1000 Including Lunch. (Approx. £125.00)
I4: Midnight Cruise to the Ice Fiord - The midnight sun and the warm red colours reflecting upon these gigantic icebergs is a memorable sight. Cruise between the icebergs and enjoy a late martini on ‘the real rocks’! The season for the midnight sun is approximately 22nd May to 24th July. Outside this season the excursion is operated as an evening cruise with the beautiful sunset reflecting over the icebergs, so don’t forget your camera!
Duration: Approx. 3 Hours. Price: DKK 500. (Approx. £62.50)
I5: By Helicopter to the Ice Cap - Whilst in Ilulissat let your guide arrange a helicopter excursion for you which will include a ground stop giving you the opportunity to get out. During the flight we cruise in low altitude over the beautiful Ilulissat Ice Fiord which is now on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Operation is dependent on the weather and helicopter capacity. Please note that this can only be booked locally.
30 minute flight + 30 minute ground stop - DKK 2350 (Approx. £294.00).
55 minute flight + 30 minute ground stop - DKK 2850 (Approx. £356.50).
I6: Hunter’s Settlement - Ilimanaq. On this tour we sail to the settlement of Ilimanaq, which is situated just south of the Kangia Ice Fiord. Ilimanaq has a population of approximately 80 people - this community being totally dependent upon fishing and hunting for survival. A completely different world compared to the town of Ilulissat. On arrival in Ilimanaq have a guided tour of the settlement before enjoying our lunch with a local family. Can also be operated by night for a small fee of DKK 250 Per Person. (Approx. £31.00)
Duration: Approx. 6 Hours. Price: DKK 1000 Including Lunch. (Approx. £125.00)
I7: Home Visit - We visit a Greenland home and enjoy ‘Coffee-mik’ (a cup of coffee which by tradition is served to all visitors) and learn about Greenland and its population.
Duration: Approx. 2 Hours. Price: DKK 175. (Approx. £22.00)
I8: Eqip - The Calving Glacier - Eqip glacier is the only glacier in the Ilulissat area where we often have the unique experience of a glacier calving. As we cruise in front of the 5km wide glacier whilst enjoying our lunch, we hope for that special sighting of an iceberg ‘delivery’ and so do a lot of seabirds, who know from experience that any calving will result in a huge meal with the new iceberg turning in the water and bringing a lot of sea animals to the surface.
Duration: Approx. 8 Hours. Price: DKK 1595 Including Lunch. (Approx. £199.00)
I9: Fishing Tour - Let’s sail out to our fishing spot, most probably near Bredebugt or possibly at the mouth of the Ilulissat Ice Fiord, and whilst we wait for our catch we will have time to enjoy the stunning surroundings. By the end of the day we will, hopefully, bring back plenty of different types of fish, including cod, halibut, redfish and catfish to name but a few!
Duration: Approx. 4 Hours. Price: DKK 1000. (Approx. £125.00)
I10: Feeding the Huskies - Ilulissat is sledge-area and the approx. 3500 dogs in town are still used for both work and fun every winter. We invite you to join the feeding of a dog team. You can see, feel, touch and most of all hear the howling of 20 hungry dogs. The owner will demonstrate the sledge and the harness and tell about life as a sledge dog in Greenland. Good shoes advised!
Duration: Approx. 1 Hour. Price: DKK 125. (Approx. £16.00)
I11: Whale Safari - By boat we go out into the Disko Bay to spot whales. In the summer time humback whales come to the Disko Bay to feed on the capelin, a small herring-like fish. As the humback whales are protected they are very trusting and can often be enjoyed at close range. However, as this is not a zoo there is of course no guarantee for seeing the whales.
Duration: Approx. 5 Hours. Price: DKK 850 Including Lunch Packet. (Approx. £106.00)
