Armenia, the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as its state religion, is peppered with monasteries, temples and churches, many of which are located in spectacular settings. This tour will take in many of these rich historical sites, together with the pleasant capital of Yerevan and various other impressive landscapes and locations.
This group tour is the perfect introduction to Armenia and operates with a minimum of 4 persons and a maximum of 15.
Arrive Yerevan and transfer to the hotel and check in for five nights.
Full day city tour of Yerevan. Visit all the major sights, including a stop near Mother Armenia statue which provides a panoramic view of the city. Explore the Matenadaran Manuscript Museum, which hosts one of the biggest depositories of ancient manuscripts in the world and the Food Market with its variety of organic fruits and vegetables. End the day with a visit to the Yerevan Brandy Factory to taste some of this legendary drink. Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant and try traditional Armenian food. Overnight in Yerevan. (B,D)
In the morning drive through the Ararat valley towards Khor Virap monastery. Located at the foot of biblical Mt. Ararat, this complex embodies the adoption of Christianity in Armenia in 301 AD. Continue to Noravank monastery with its intricate carvings, situated among the unusual plumb rosy cliffs. Stop in the village of Areni to enjoy tasting of wine made in a family-run winery. Lunch at a café inside a cave before returning to Yerevan. (B.L)
Visit Garni Pagan Temple which dates back to the 1st century AD. Explore medieval Armenian architecture with a visit to the Geghard Cave Monastery (UNESCO site). Some chambers of the monastery were carved out of solid rock and possess exceptional acoustics. Walk through the canyon of Garni, famous for its unique rock formations of basalt pillars. Enjoy a traditional Armenian barbeque and watch the ceremony of traditional Armenian bread baking by the women of the village. After lunch, drive to Lake Sevan, one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the world. Here, visit the 9th century Sevan monastery perched on a cliff above the lake and enjoy the wonderful view. Take a trip to Echmiadzin, the religious capital of Armenia.Visit the archeological site of Zvartnots Cathedral, a masterpiece of Armenian architecture from the 7th century and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.Visit the main Cathedral of Echmiadzin, participate in the Sunday Mass and listen to the Divine Lithurgy performed by the church choir. After returning to Yerevan discover the outdoor handicraft market Vernisage and find the most attractive hand-made local souvenirs, carpets, handicrafts made by local artists and craftsmen. Rest of afternoon free before farewell dinner at a restaurant with live Armenian folk music. (B,D)
