11 Day Itinerary

DAY 1
UK - ICELAND

Arrive Reykjavik, transfer to hotel and check in for one night.

DAY 2
REYKJAVIK – THINGVELLIR – GULLFOSS – GEYSIR – HVOLSVÖLLUR

Visit Thingvellir National Park, the ancient site of the world's first outdoor parliament then travel to the Geysir geothermal area to witness the famous Strokkur geyser as well as numerous other boiling mud pools and hot springs. Onwards to the spectacular Gullfoss, the ‘Golden Falls’, one of the most impressive waterfalls in Europe. Overnight in Hvolsvöllur. (B,D)
 

DAY 3
HVOLSVÖLLUR – VÍK – DYRHÓLAEY – KIRKJUBÆJARKLAUSTUR

Admire the waterfalls of Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss, before enjoying great views from Dyrhólaey* headland where thousands of puffins nest during the summer. Stop in Vík before crossing the Mýrdalssandur outwash plains of Katla volcano. Pass through Eldhraun, the largest mass of lava ever to flow on earth. Overnight in Kirkjubæjarklaustur. (B,D)

*Please note that Dyrholaey is closed in the Spring during the nesting season (mid May until June 23rd).

DAY 4
KIRKJUBÆJARKLAUSTUR – JÖKULSÁRLÓN – SKAFTAFELL – KIRKJUBÆJARKLAUSTUR

Drive through beautiful scenery towards the Vatnajökull ice cap, by far the largest in Europe. Circumnavigate the Öræfajökull volcano, featuring Iceland’s highest point, Hvannadalshnjúkur. Visit Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon, where huge icebergs loom and lurch on the water. At Svínafellsjökull, enjoy a close encounters with a glacier tongue. Pass by Skaftafell National Park en route. Overnight in Kirkjubæjarklaustur. (B,D)

DAY 5
KIRKJUBÆJARKLAUSTUR – LANDMANNALAUGAR – ÞJÓRSÁRDALUR

Travel to Landmannalaugar, a magnificent area surrounded by colorful rhyolite mountains. This pearl of the interior consists of deep valleys and sculptured, often mossy mountains, many formed in volcanic eruptions under ice-age icecaps, forging a powerfully colorful experience. Overnight in Þjórsárdalur. (B,D)

DAY 6
ÞJÓRSÁRDALUR - ‘SPRENGISANDUR’ - LAKE MÝVATN

Discover hidden parts of the Icelandic interior, exploring the vast and desolate wilderness of the Sprengisandur highland route. Packed lunch at the Nýidalur mountain hut in the country’s centre. With no bridges over the rivers, several river crossings are made on this rough track. Overnight at Lake Mývatn. (B,D)

DAY 7
LAKE MÝVATN - TJÖRNES - ÁSBYRGI - DETTIFOSS - LAKE MÝVATN

Travel through Húsavík town and around the Tjörnes peninsula. Discover the serene horseshoe-shaped canyon of Ásbyrgi National Park that according to myth, is the hoof print left by Sleipnir, the magical eight-legged horse of the Norse god Óðinn. Continue to thundering Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall in Europe. The nature reserve of Lake Mývatn follows, a paradise for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers.  See the solfataras of the Hverarönd geothermal region, peculiar lava formations and explosive craters at Krafla. Overnight at Lake Mývatn. (B,D)

DAY 8
LAKE MÝVATN - AKUREYRI - SKAGAFJÖRÐUR - HVAMMSTANGI

Visit Goðafoss waterfall before continuing to Akureyri, the vibrant "Capital of the North". Free time in Akureyri to explore or relax at your leisure. Continue to the Skagafjörður area, renowned for horse breeding and home to many important sites from the classic Icelandic Sagas. In the evening, a horseback trek on locally bred Iceland horses is optional. Overnight in Hvammstangi. (B,D)

DAY 9
HVAMMSTANGI - EIRÍKSSTAÐIR - SNÆFELLSNES PENINSULA

Journey through rolling farmlands and across Laxárdalsheiði heath to the Viking Age house at Eiríksstaðir, the original home of Erik the Red and birthplace of his son Leifur Eiriksson, two of the most celebrated Vikings in the world. Pass through a series of small fishing villages on the northern coast of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. Overnight in Snæfellsnes. (B,D)

DAY 10
SNÆFELLSNES PENINSULA - SNÆFELLSJÖKULL NATIONAL PARK - REYKJAVIK

A day in Snæfellsnes National Park. Circle around the legendary Snæfellsjökull glacier, where, according to Jules Verne, lies the entrance to the center of the Earth. Continue to the expansive black sea shore of Djúpalónssandur. Stop at the picturesque harbour village of Arnarstapi with its magnificent columnar basalt rock formations. Take a unique walk between the villages of Arnarstapi and Hellnar before driving to Reykjavik. Overnight in Reykjavík. (B,D)

DAY 11
REYKJAVIK – BLUE LAGOON – KEFLAVIK – UK

Transfer to the Blue Lagoon for the chance to enjoy a unique bathing experience! After bathing in the lagoon, transfer to airport for flight back to UK (B)
