The Northeastern highlands, the National Park of Vatnajokull glacier and the freestanding Volcano Snaefell are easily accessible within one hour drive from Egilsstadir.
The highlands are home to over 3000 wild reindeer. In winter the reindeer leave their summer homes on the vast moors at the edge of Vatnajökull glacier for the grass of the lowlands. It is therefore quite likely that you will spot them while driving around.
Other wildlife during winter includes the shy, white ptarmigans that hide in the dwarf-like shrubs while the gyrfalcons soar above. On the coastal lagoons you may encounter great flocks of swans and in the fjords thousands of eider ducks that seek winter shelter.
