Explore Iceland's capital, Reykjavik on this 4 day adventure and spend New Year's Eve celebrating Icelandic style. On New Year's Eve in Reykjavik, almost every family in the city seem to come out and gather together to let off fireworks, turning into one of the largest displays in the world. Combined with music, dancing and cocktails, New Year's Eve in Reykjavik is a unique glimpse into local life and a night not to be missed.
Stay at the 4-star Hotel Alda in the heart of Reykjavik and embark on an exciting Superjeep journey to hunt for the northern lights.
Arrive in Iceland. Take a non-guided transfer from Keflavik International Airport to accommodation in Reykjavik. This evening, embark upon a unique journey by Super Jeep to search for the northern lights. Given clear skies and a little bit of luck, Autumn through to Spring is the ideal time to see this spectacular natural phenomenon dancing across the arctic sky. The elders say that the harsher the frost of a night, the more intense the colours will be. Experience an evening tinged with excitement and surprises, exploring in the dark and feeling the cold but enjoying the warmth and comfort inside the Super Jeep! Should you not get to see the northern lights try again on another evening for free.
After breakfast, why not take an optional excursion and take a tour of the Golden Circle by Superjeep. Experience some of Iceland’s greatest natural phenomena, geology and history on an exciting Super Jeep Tour around the classical sights of South West Iceland, known as the ‘Golden Circle’. Include either a Snowmobiling tour on white snowfields or on Langjokull – Iceland’s second largest glacier (depending on snow conditions) or a Quad Biking activity through mountainous desert highlands.
With guidance and various stops along the way visit Gullfoss, the queen of Icelandic waterfalls, high and mighty it tumbles violently into the deep gorge below. Explore the geothermal area in Haukadalur and see geysers erupt including Strokkur, one of the largest and most powerful geysers erupting almost every 10 minutes.
This evening be collected from your hotel at 11pm for a trip to enjoy the best views of Reykjavik‘s spectacular display of fireworks. Be a part of the local festivities, enjoy a toast of sparkling wine and ring in the New Year Icelandic style. Watch in awe as the skies of Reykjavik are set ablaze with over 500 tons of fireworks. Spend New Year's Day being pampered on an optional excursion to the Blue Lagoon. Ask our Iceland specialists about the range of bookable options. Enjoy a morning or afternoon at the Blue Lagoon. Located south-west of Reykjavik near the fishing village of Grindavik, this thermal spa is the perfect way to unwind on New Years Day. A high-temperature geothermal field supplies the hot water to the Reykjanes district and steam to run the power plant, and it is the mineral-rich overflow water from this operation that fills the lagoon. The geothermal water is pumped up from 2,000 metres below the Earth’s surface and high levels of silica, minerals and algae give the lagoon its rich blue colour. Whether in the middle of winter surrounded by snow, or in the long summer daylight, the Lagoon is exciting, invigorating and superbly relaxing – an experience not to be missed!
Between late autumn and early spring, the northern lights are often seen dancing in the sky, when conditions allow a stop will be made in the lava fields to experience the spectacular display of undulating colours. (B)
