Karelia is a vast wilderness that stretches from St Petersburg to the Arctic Circle and contains the two largest lakes in Europe – Ladoga and Onega. Petrozavodsk was founded in 1703 as an iron foundry and armaments plant for Peter the Great, although despite this industrial start, today the town has a pleasant provincial feel to it with its tree-lined streets and many parks. The main highlight of today is an excursion to Kizhi Island, located some 65 kilometres away across Lake Onega. This fairytale island includes the open-air Museum of Wooden architecture and the remarkable Church of the Transfiguration. Overnight stay in Petrozavodsk.

SOLOVETSKY ISLANDS

Solovki are six islands located in the forbidding waters of the White Sea, just 165 kilometres from the Arctic Circle. Known for their scenic beauty but difficult to access even today, the islands have long been used for both retreat and exile. On the island stands one of Russia’s most famous and holy monasteries – Solovetsky Monastery, which was founded in the 15th century. However, more recent history reveals its tragic past as a brutal Soviet gulag camp, where over a million prisoners died. Today, Solovetsky Monastery is a World Heritage Site, museum and home to a handful of monks. Transfer to Belomorsk railway station for overnight train back to St Petersburg.
