Wine Tour of Serbia

Before the communist era Serbia was one of the biggest producers of quality wine in Europe and in recent years the country’s nine wine regions have made an award winning comeback. On this 8-day tour travelling by private car with a driver-guide, stop at small towns and villages where family wineries and ancient wine cellars abound. Taste Bermet dessert wine, a specialty of the Fruška Gora region, visit Rajac where 270 stone wine cellars surround a picturesque central square, and stop in the small village of Gudurica where the home-grown Muscat Ottonel and Banatski Riesling come highly recommended.

Fly to Belgrade and transfer to the hotel for two nights.

Embark upon a morning city tour of Belgrade. Enjoy photo-stops at the Parliament, Saint Sava Orthodox Cathedral, Kalemegdan Fortress and Knez Mihajlova Street. (B)

Enjoy an excursion to Sremski Karlovci - a small baroque town famous for its architecture and wine cellars. Here taste a dessert wine called Bermet, a specialty of northern Serbia's Fruska Gora wine region. The exact recipe is a secret, held by only a handful of families in the town of Sremski Karlovci and according to some documents it was even served on the Titanic. Continue to Serbia’s second city of Novi Sad with its picturesque Petrovaradin Fort overlooking the Danube. Stop in the town of Irig and the Kovacevic Winery for a wine tasting. The Kovacevic family have been producing high-quality wines for more than a century from grapes grown in their own vineyards situated at southern slopes of Mt. Fruska Gora and one of their most popular grape varieties is Chardonnay buy they also grow Vranac, Cabernet and Rhine Riesling. (B,L,D)

Travel to Vrsac - known as a viticulture area since the Roman rule. The first written data on Vrsac wine originate in 1494, when a Budim court steward paid 10,5 golden forint for the barrel of Vrsac wine intended for the Hungarian King Ladislaus. In the 19th century, Vrsac vineyards were among the biggest vineyards in Europe and stretched across 17,000 acres.Stop in the small village of Gudurica, which is one of the biggest producers of wine in the region. There are around one thousand inhabitants of 22 different nationalities living in the village; almost all of them are wine makers. Grape varieties such as Zupljanka, Smederevka and Kreaca are grown here and white wines are still the most popular. There are great quality wines such as Muscat Ottonel, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco and Banatski Riesling. (B, L, D)

Drive to Viminacium, one of the most important Roman cities and military camps from the 1st to 4th century. Today this complex covers a surface area of over 450 hectares. After a Roman style lunch, visit Lepenski Vir - a famous archeological site dating back to between 6700-5500 BC. Drive to Kladovo, a small town located on the shores of the Danube. The town is surrounded by beautiful hills, well known for their vineyards. En route is it possible to see one of the most beautiful views of the Danube - The Iron Gate Gorge. Overnight in Kladovo. After breakfast drive to the village of Rajac near Negotin, famous for its vineyards dating from the Roman times and for its complex of stone wine cellars dating back to the 18th and the 19th century. There are 270 of these wine cellars surrounding a picturesque central square with fountain. Here, enjoy a traditional lunch with wine tasting. In the afternoon visit the Felix Romuliana UNESCO Site. With its beautiful frescoes and mosaic floors, it is considered to be one of the finest preserved examples of Roman palace architecture. Overnight in Arandjelovac. (B, L, D)

In the heart of Sumadija region, on the oak covered slopes of Oplenac Hill, lies the town of Topola. It was the cradle of the Karadjordjevic dynasty, who were heavily involved in local wine production. Here see the church of Saint George and the imperial burial site, known for their beautiful frescoes. Visit King Petar’s house and the royal wine cellar, which has 2 floors of underground cellars and still holds the 3 large wine barrels that King Aleksandar received as wedding gifts from the Serbs, Croats and Slovenians in 1922. Each of these barrels contains 2,000 litres of wine and has the first verses of the Serbian, Croatian and Slovenian anthems carved on them. After the Second World War, the vineyards of Oplenac were neglected until 2000. After renewing cultivation, grapes were harvested in 2006 and in the following year wines from royal vineyards were once again consumed. Taste wine from this region before returning to Belgrade.
