A 14 day fly-drive tour of
Turkey visiting its most historic places from £TBA

First days are spent exploring Ankara
and the natural wonders of Cappadocia before journeying
to Sanliurfa, where en route you will visit Mount Nemrut,
topped by the unopened 1st-century mausoleum of King
Antiochus of Commagene and the famed city of Mesopotamia
- Harran. This mystical and ancient village of beehive
homes built of mud bricks is mentioned in Genesis as
being the birthplace of Abraham.
After an overnight in Urfa you head
for Mardin, which is spectacular viewed from the south,
with its tiered layers of houses, mansions, mosques
and churches, rising out of the endless plain and clinging
to a huge citadel-topped rock. On arrival at Diyarbakir,
a visit is made to the massive encircling basalt city
walls, which they say can be viewed from the moon. The
ancient city houses caravanserai, bazaars and Syraic
churches in its labyrinthine streets.
You take the ferry to Akdamar
Island where you can visit an exquisite example of an
Armenian church before continuing to Van. Here you see
fine example of Urartian castles. The drive to Dogubayazit
is outstanding in an area of already exceptional scenery,
where Mount Ararat commands the plains below. Just outside
Kars are the remains of Ani, the 10th-century capital
of Armenia. Heading towards the Black Sea through forests
and villages untouched by tourism, you arrive at busy
Trabzon. A busy town port with excellent seafood restaurants
and markets selling glossy fruit and hazelnuts, the
regional speciality.
