Vietnam has long been
popular with Hollywood directors as a vehicle for
war movies. For Regent, Vietnam has been a favourite
for very different reasons. We were one of the first
to operate holidays and tours there in the early 80's
and two decades later the country still holds a fascination
for us.
Saigon and Hanoi are
both developing fast, but the traditional still outweighs
the modern and it is not uncommon to see a monk in
flowing orange robes collecting alms outside a karaoke
bar from somebody driving a top of the range Mercedes.
Away from the two main cities, life has changed imperceptibly. The lush Mekong Delta
has some very lively river markets with floating traffic
jams of M25 proportions; hill tribe women in the markets
of the former hill stations of Dalat and Sapa find
foreigners as amusing as we find them fascinating. The sedate pace of life
in cultural Hue and Hoi An is best discovered by going
with the flow on a bicycle and the mysterious islands
of Halong Bay and the unspoilt tropical coastline
rival the best beach holidays in the world.
