Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan, is located in the west of the country which is generally the busier region for visitors.

If you’re looking for evidence that the modern world has impinged on Bhutan then Thimphu is where you’ll find it, yet as you stroll the streets of this high altitude capital, evidence of traditional Bhutanese culture abounds. Crimson-robed monks and locals in the compulsory traditional dress – ghos for men and kiras for women – are very much in evidence alongside modern bars and restaurants. Visit the splendid Trashi Chhoe Dzong, Thimphu's main fort-monastery: head up the hill behind it for impressive views of the dzong and city. Aim to arrive in time for the popular weekend market which is a great place to watch traditional Bhutanese life and of course to shop for handicrafts including wooden bowls, amulets and prayer wheels.
