Sail through the frozen landscapes that await north of the Arctic Circle aboard an ice-strengthened vessel on an Arctic cruise. Begin your journey aboard the M/V Hondius in Scotland, departing from Aberdeen to head north to the Arctic Circle. Sail to the beautiful Fair Isle, stop at Jan Mayen island and continue up to the remote Spitsbergen archipelago. Watch out for Arctic wildlife as polar bears, whales and birds and unearth the unique geology and history of this Arctic region.

Board the M/V Hondius ship in Aberdeen. Explore the ship and get comfortable as the ship slips its moorings and sail out of the harbour. (D)

Sail to the Fair Isle, where a huge number of birds inhabits its lush grasslands and spectacular cliffs. Walk across the island to the local bird observatory and spot northern fulmars, kittiwakes, northern gannets and puffins. (B,L,D)

JAN MAYEN ISLAND
JAN MAYEN ISLAND

Continue north to the Norwegian island of Jan Mayen and spend two days at sea in this area. Keep a close lookout for minke, fin, orca, or blue whales.  (B,L,D)

Jan Mayen hosts landscapes of breath-taking beauty and the northernmost subaerial active volcano on the planet – the Beerenberg. Northern fulmars, Kittiwakes and Brünich’s guillemots breeding on steep cliffs make this island a spectacular place for bird-watching. Today visit the weather station based in Jan Mayen island and walk to the remains of a 17th-century Dutch whaling station amid the thick moss beds of this stark volcanic landscape. (B,L,D)

Sail north towards Spitsbergen along the edge of the sea ice and search for bowhead whales, harp seals and polar bears. (B,L,D)

Reach Forlandsundet, between the main island of Spitsbergen and the narrow Prins Karls Forland island, where walruses may be spotted. Alternatively, sail into St. Johns Fjord or head south to the mouth of Isfjorden, landing at Alkhornet. (B,L,D)

FLY TO THE UK

In the morning, disembark in Longyearbyen and transfer to the airport for your flight back to the UK. (B)

The M/V Hondius offers high-quality accommodation for 176 passengers in one spacious suite (35 square meters, 377 square feet), six grand suites with balconies (27 square meters, 291 square feet), eight junior suites (19 to 20 square meters, 205 to 215 square feet), eight superior cabins (20 to 21 square meters, 215 to 226 square feet), 11 twin deluxe cabins, (19 to 21 square meters, 205 to 226 square feet), 14 twin window cabins (12 to 14 square meters, 129 to 151 square feet) as well as 28 twin porthole cabins, two triple porthole cabins, and four quadruple porthole cabins that vary in size from 12 to 18 square meters, or 129 to 194 square feet.

The passenger capacity certificate for Hondius is 196 persons. One deck consists of a large observation lounge and separate lecture room, which are reserved for a wide variety of interactive workshops and exhibitions.
