Embark on an exciting polar expedition to explore the pristine frozen wildernesses that await north of the Arctic Circle, aboard a luxurious state-of-the-art, ice-strengthened vessel on an Arctic cruise. Begin your journey in Iceland, departing Reykjavik to skirt around the north Icelandic coast and surrounding islands, and heading far north of the Arctic Circle. This expedition next spies land at Jan Mayen island and continues up to the remote Spitsbergen archipelago. Here watch out for polar bears and Arctic wildlife while taking the opportunity to discover the unique geology and history of the region’s early polar exploration first hand.

DAY 1

Fly to Reykjavik, the charming capital of Iceland and starting point of your expedition. Reykjavík is home to a wealth of cultural institutions including museums, galleries, and the Hallgrímskirkja church. Leisure possibilities inside the city include parks, whale watching excursions, and trips to soak in geothermal baths. You can also take advantage of Reykjavík’s wide range of shopping possibilities, excellent dining options, and famous nightlife. Overnight at your hotel in Reykjavik.

EMBARKATION ON THE M/V SEA SPIRIT

In the afternoon, climb aboard the luxury expedition ship, the M/V Sea Spirit. Explore the ship and get comfortable as the ship slips its moorings and sail out of the harbour. (D)

Today reach the Westfjords , a large peninsula in northwestern Iceland known for it’s natural beauty. Discover breathtaking coastal fjords, jagged bird cliffs and tiny fishing villages embracing traditional ways of life. (B,L,D)

GRIMSEY ISLAND
The tiny Icelandic island of Grimsey, just north of the coastal mainland , lies exactly on the Arctic Circle. Grimsey is remarkable for majestic basalt rock formations and Arctic birds; here great colonies of Atlantic puffins, known also as the "clowns of the sea", can be spotted . (B,L,D)

Jan Mayen hosts landscapes of breathtaking beauty and the northernmost subaerial active volcano on the planet – the Beerenberg. The island is wild and uninhabited (not including members of Norwegian weather station!) Northern fulmars, Kittiwakes, and Brünich’s guillemots breeding on steep cliffs make this island a spectacular place for birdwatching. (B,L,D)

EXPLORING SPITSBERGEN
EXPLORING SPITSBERGEN
Start your expedition exploring the northwestern part of Svalbard and marvel at the astounding scenery from the deck as you slip past the pristine landscapes. Panoramic vistas here boast deep fjords and narrow channels flanked by jagged snowy mountain peaks.
 
Watch as immense tidewater glaciers calve, cracking with an ear-splitting noise and crashing into the icy, turquoise waters below. Keep eyes open for fascinating Arctic wildlife, both from the deck of the M/V Sea Spirit and from the smaller zodiac boats. Polar bears can be seen hunting on the pack ice or reindeer grazing on flowering tundra to Arctic foxes playing together and walrus lounging by the shores.
 
Discover remnants of whaling camps, coal mining operations, old trappers' cabins, staging areas of historic attempts to discover the North Pole and abandoned polar research stations. This trip will also take you to visit Ny Alesund, one of the world's most northerly settlements; this former mining town is now home to an international community of Arctic researchers. (B,L,D)

M/V Sea Spirit

The ice-strengthened small all-suite expedition ship Sea Spirit (originally Renaissance V) was built in 1991 in Italy. From that time she has changed several operators and regions of navigation, cruising in Singapore, Alaska, Pacific Basin, Arctic and Antarctica. The vessel was modified in late 2010.

Providing spacious suites for accommodation of maximum of 114 passengers (the smallest suite is 20 sq. meters) the Sea Spirit at the same time features maneuverability and friendly atmosphere of small ships. All suites have private facilities and exterior views. Some of the suites feature private balconies for enjoying fantastic landscapes of the Arctic.
