Located close to Torne River at the border between Sweden and Finland, Arthotel is a collection of Swedish country houses that the owner Gunhild Stensmyr, has lovingly renovated to create chic accommodation in an area of stunning natural beauty.
There are three accommodation options to choose from; Stay in Villa Tolonen, which can accommodate between 2 and 6 persons in a lovely Scandic-chic designed house. Villa Wennberg is the main building of the Arthotel and is adorned with arts and handicraft inspired by the stunning countryside surrounding the house.There are 2 double rooms and 2 single rooms all with en-suite facilities. Downstairs a living room with a log burning fireplace lends itself to cosy evening inside and a dining room for all the houses. For the solitude-seekers stay in the secluded Anundi Villa, located over 2 kilometres from the main house with its own private sauna in the basement.
From the door there is a private walking/skiing trail straight into the forest, grill facilities and an architect-designed lookout tower two-kilometres from the house.
Fly to Rovaniemi in Finland and on arrival transfer to Arthotel Tornedalen. Choose from staying in the Villa Tolonen, the main house Wennberg Villa or the remote Anundi Villa in Swedish Lapland and check in for a four-night stay. (L,D)
After breakfast, embark on a cross-country ski excursion to a lookout tower located deep within the forest. A professional guide will be on hand to teach novice skiers and answer any questions about the nature and wild animals that you may come across. Stop for lunch, which will be cooked on an open fire, and enjoy the tranquillity of the surrounding wilderness before returning to your villa for a delicious home-cooked meal. (B,L,D)
This morning, learn the art of ice-fishing at a nearby lake. If you’re lucky enough to catch a fish, you can cook it on an open fire. In the afternoon, visit a Sámi family to learn about the unique flavours of traditional Sami food where wild berries and herbs have been used for centuries in culinary preparation. (B,L,D)
This morning, experience a dog sled tour in the small village of Storträsk, 25km from Arthotel Tornedalen. Over many years, the host Helénè has welcomed guests from all over the world and offers tailored personal service for small groups. Take the reins and drive your own team of dogs through the Arctic wilderness or sit back and enjoy the ride with an experienced musher at the helm. Enjoy hot coffee, cooked over an open fire before returning to your accommodation for lunch. In the afternoon, why not relax in the private wood-heated sauna. (B,L,D)
