Even though many people associate the aurora with cold and snowy destinations, one of the most active seasons is autumn and the lights can be seen from as early as September.
By day, autumnal colours are reflected in glass-mirror lakes and by night, the sky can be filled with the dancing Northern Lights.
Fly to Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland, and check in your wooden chalet for 4 nights. Straddling the Arctic Circle, Ounasvaaran Lakituvat’s cosy wooden chalets are located on top of the Ounasvaara Fell in Rovaniemi, The chalet apartments have 2 bedrooms, a modern and fully equipped kitchen, a spacious living room and even a sauna.
In the morning, enjoy a guided visit to husky and reindeer farms. Meet with an authentic reindeer herder and husky musher and have a chance to take photos of the reindeer and huskies and learn more about what life on the farm is like. Relax by the fire place with a cup of coffee and hear stories about the reindeer before continuing on to Claus Village and the numerous souvenir shops, Santa’s Post Office and a visit with the man in red himself. After breakfast, enjoy the day relaxing at leisure in your wooden chalet. The chalets are in the middle of a network of hiking trails so it is possible to easily explore the surrounding nature. In the evening, suit up in a warm rescue suit, lie back and float in pristine waters under the aurora borealis for a truly surreal, but magical Arctic experience. (B)
After breakfast, learn how to survive in the wild on a guided day trip into the forest. Build emergency shelters, make fires without matches, find food from the forest and prepare a snack. Try your hand at fishing and cook your catch over an open fire if you are lucky! (B,L)
