Aboard the Golden Eagle Danube Express, explore the vast wealth of architectural treasures as the train traverses enchanting cities and picturesque landscapes of Transylvania and the Balkans.

Begin in the city of Budapest, laced with a beautiful collection of medieval and Baroque buildings. Before boarding this exclusive train, take time to discover the absorbing history of the once divided cities of Buda and Pest and explore some of its more modern-day customs. This rail voyage meanders through stunningly beautiful countryside and awe-inspiring mountain ranges on an exploration of mythical Transylvania in Romania. Continue westwards though the intriguing countries of the former Yugoslavia, discovering the rich past of the captivating Balkan region.

At the end of this remarkable journey, arrive into the stunning maritime city of Venice – a unique mix of Gothic and Renaissance palaces perched on the edge of the Italian coast.

DAY 1
Arrive in Budapest
Budapest in the evening - Danube Express Train

Arrive in Budapest and transfer to the Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace for a two-night stay. Enjoy a welcome reception dinner in the elegant surrounds of this art nouveau landmark hotel. (D)

DAY 2
BUDAPEST
Budapest - Danube Express Train

Budapest comprises two cities separated by the River Danube. The old city of Buda and the imposing Royal Palace dominate the city skyline and offer stunning views across the Danube to the commercial heart of Pest. Enjoy a city tour which includes the Royal Palace, St. Mathias Church, and a panoramic view of the city from Gellert Hill. (B,L,D)

DAY 3
LAJOSMIZSE & KECSKEMET
‘Puszta’ horse show - Lajosmizse

This morning, enjoy a drinks reception in the impressive Royal Waiting Room at Budapest Nyugati station before boarding the Golden Eagle Danube Express. Settle into your cabin and enjoy lunch as the train heads to Lajosmizse for a spectacular ‘Puszta’ horse show. Later in the afternoon, travel the short distance to explore Kecskemét – a fascinating city at the geographical centre of Hungary. Back on board, savour a pre-dinner drink in the bar as the train continues across the Great Hungarian Plain, before dining in the Restaurant Car on the way to Transylvania. (B,L,D)

DAY 4
BRASOV & SIGHISOARA
The medieval Castle of Bran

Arrive in Sighisoara for a walking tour of the town’s main highlights. A World Heritage site rumoured to be the birthplace of Dracula, it's one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe. Return to the train for lunch as it continues onto Brasov for a tour of Bran Castle, popularly known as ‘Dracula’s Castle’. Back on board later in the evening, the train zigzags as it climbs over the Carpathian Mountains and threads its way through the dramatic mountainous landscape. Dinner is served as this exclusive private train continues onto Bulgaria. (B,L,D)

DAY 5
VELIKO TARNOVO & PLOVDIV
Plovdiv Bulgaria - Danube Express Train

After breakfast, arrive in Bulgaria’s ancient capital of Veliko Tarnovo, with its magnificent mountainous backdrop and quaint stone houses that are dotted along the steep banks of the Yantra River.

 

Also included on today's itinerary is a stop in Plovdiv – the second largest city in Bulgaria after Sofia. Known as ‘The City on Seven Hills’, Plovdiv is one of the oldest cities in Europe, with more than 200 known archaeological sites. Spend the afternoon exploring the city’s charming Old Town with its ancient theatres, medieval walls, and Ottoman baths. (B,L,D)

DAY 6
BELGRADE
Serbian folk singers

This morning, the train pulls into the Serbian capital of Belgrade. Located at the strategic meeting point of the Danube and Sava River, this truly cosmopolitan city has fortifications dating from Celtic times, medieval tombs, and Turkish baths.

 

Spend a full day exploring the Belgrade Fortress, Town Hall, Republic Square, and Knez Mihajlova Street (the main shopping area). In the afternoon, following a traditional lunch in a local restaurant, stop at the excellent Tesla Museum which honours the life and works of the mechanical engineer and inventor, Nikola Tesla. DAY 7
MOSTAR & SARAJEVO
The streets of Sarajevo Old Town

This morning, explore the historic city of Mostar – one of the most important cities of the Ottoman Empire and the crossroads of many civilizations, cultures, and religions. Visit a local mosque before meandering through the city’s narrow, bazaar-lined streets to shop for traditional souvenirs and handicrafts.

 

Early this afternoon, arrive into the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo. Discover the city’s poignant history, with stops at the location of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand – heir apparent to the Austro-Hungarian throne in 1914. (B,L,D)

DAY 8
LJUBLJANA
Predjama Castle

Ljubljana is a delightful city, combining ancient architecture and a youthful culture. The city tour includes visits to Preseren Square, Three Bridges, Dragon Bridge, and Plecnik Market. In the afternoon, travel out of the city to Predjama Castle, perched on a cliff high above the beautiful Inner Carniola region. Explore the chambers and stairwells to learn about Erazem of Predjama – the castle’s most famous resident knight. Then, continue to nearby Postojna Cave for an underground train ride deep into the cave system. (B,L,D)

DAY 9
TRIESTE & VENICE
Trieste - Danube Express Train

This morning, the Golden Eagle Danube Express arrives into the Italian Port of Trieste for a short tour. Visit Piazza Unita d’Italia, the main town square, before climbing the hill up to the famous Church of San Giusto.

 

Enjoy a farewell lunch on board as the train departs Trieste and follows the Adriatic coast towards Mestre. Follow the three-mile causeway across the Venice Lagoon and into Venice Santa Lucia station, located on the Grand Canal. Say farewell to the amazing train crew and transfer by boat to the five-star Hotel Danieli, a Luxury Collection Hotel, for two nights. (B,L,D)

DAY 10
VENICE
Venice - Danube Express Train

Venice is a truly captivating and romantic city. Stroll through the winding lanes beside the Grand Canal to St. Mark’s Square – the heart of Venetian life for some 1,000 years. See St. Mark’s Basilica and explore the Rialto Market on a guided tour.

 

A trip to Venice wouldn't be complete without a leisurely gondola ride, which includes a 30-minute tour of Venice’s famous canals. Alternatively, enjoy the city at your own pace and stroll through the artists’ district of Dorsoduro, stopping to take in the city’s most breath-taking views from Accademia Bridge. In the evening, enjoy a farewell reception dinner. (B,L,D)

DEPART VENICE
Venice - Danube Express Train

Danube Express

The Golden Eagle Danube Express is Central Europe's most distinctive private train, often termed a luxury "Hotel on Wheels", it offers a very sophisticated yet relaxing way to travel to the Europe's most enticing destinations and to explore exceptional and interesting places.

Choose between Superior or Superior Deluxue compartments 

Superior
Each supeior sleeper carriage has just five spacious yet intimate en-suite superior cabins offering every convenience and comfort so you may sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery as it rolls by.

Private bathrooms feature a shower with constant hot water, washbasin and toilet. There is a heated towel rail, shaver socket and hairdryer. A range of toiletries and a dressing gown are provided. Cabins have individually controlled air-conditioning, lighting with dimmer switches, individual reading lights, power sockets and a safe.

Coordinated fabrics complement wood-panelled walls and brass fittings. Two comfortable armchairs provide daytime seating and a free-standing chair adds flexibility. Cupboards and a full length wardrobe provide ample storage whilst the large picture window and full length mirror enhance the spacious feel. A second window will open for fresh air and for that perfect photo opportunity.

During dinner each evening the living room is converted into two comfortable lower beds by your attendant who is also on hand to bring you early morning tea or coffee.

Superior Deluxe
There are just 4 superior deluxe cabins per car. With 12 cabins per departure, each cabin offers comfortable daytime seating with a full length sofa and two additional chairs. The large cabin also benefits from two full-size picture windows, one of which is openable to add to the bright and airy feel of the interior.

Each evening the cabin is transformed into a luxurious bedroom with a UK-standard King Size bed. All cabins have, as standard, a large double wardrobe with excellent storage space, individually controlled air-conditioning, lighting with dimmer switches, individual reading lights, in cabin Wi-Fi and USB ports, power sockets and a safe.

Meals on Board
All meals are included, starting with dinner on the first day and ending with breakfast on the last day, unless otherwise stated. All departures feature one or two Restaurant Cars where you can enjoy the excellent waiter-served food and wine. Several times during the tour sample authentic local cuisine with wine and a selection of drinks off the train, which is also included.  For those of you who enjoy a tipple or two, a generous drinks allowance, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, is included with lunch and dinner on and off the train.
