This is an Arctic adventure like no other. Spend five days exploring the Finnish wilderness by dog sled and one day visiting the Finnish capital Helsinki. From your base in Vuokatti, spend your days and evenings taking husky safaris into the surrounding forests with experienced guides. Search for the northern lights from your sled and feast on delicious food cooked over an open campfire to experience the very best of the wild Finnish winters.
Fly to Helsinki, travel by train to Kajaani (about 6 hours) and transfer to the Hotel Vuokatti & Suites. The hotel facilities include gym, spacious sauna and an à la carte restaurant with magnificent views over the lake.
This morning, transfer to the husky kennels in Vuokatti, home to around 80 huskies, and get suited in your warm winter clothes. Meet and harness your sled dogs and team up in pairs of two (traditionally named Björkis) to learn how to mush your dogs along a 12km trail through the snowy winter forest. One of the most iconic yet relaxing sounds of winter in Lapland is the rhythmic padding of the husky’s paws on the snow. Stop for some hot drinks and photo opportunities before returning to your accommodation (B,L)
Spend the morning at leisure. If you’re brave enough, perhaps go ice swimming in Lake Nuas or make a campfire to keep warm as you enjoy the wilderness. In the late afternoon, transfer to the husky kennel for an evening adventure searching for the northern lights by dogsled. Sit back, wrap yourself in blankets and relax as your personal guide drives your sled through the winter landscape to an open frozen lake. Here, if the skies are clear, sightings of the northern lights are common and spectacular. Warm up by an open fire in a traditional Mongolian yurt and feast on a delicious picnic dinner, washed down with some hot drinks. Here, to see the northern lights dance, all you need to do is step outside the yurt and look up, before returning to hotel (B,D)
Put what you have learnt to good use over the last few days and spend the day driving your own team of huskies along a 30km winter trail. Venture deep into the forest to reach another yurt camp and relax by an open fire for some hot food and drinks with your guide. Mush your huskies back to the kennels and transfer back to your accommodation, and spend the rest of the day at leisure. (B,L)
After breakfast, you’ve a free day to spend either relaxing and appreciating the scenic countryside or choosing to partake in some optional excursions. Perhaps opt to embark on an exhilarating snowmobile safari through the white forest or don some snowshoes to try a snowshoe hike. If you are looking for something more relaxing, you can spend the day at the nearby Katinkulta Spa pampering yourself with a massage or treatment. (B)
In the morning transfer back by train to Helsinki and check in to your hotel for a last night. Spend the rest of the day at leisure exploring the Finnish capital walking along captivating boulevards and backstreets. See impressive architectures, learn more about its history and perhaps spend the evenings sipping a drink in one of the many exciting new bars. (B)
Transfer to the airport for the flight back to the UK. (B)
