Situated 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, Ilulissat in Western Greenland is a great place to view the northern lights. With views across Disko Bay it is known as the 'Town of Icebergs' where the glacier that feeds the ice fjord is one of the most productive in the world.
Board your flight at Reykjavik's domestic airport and fly with Air Iceland to Ilulissat. You will be met by your guide and transfer to Hotel Arctic where you will discuss the plan for your stay with the guide over a cup of coffee. Enjoy a guided walking tour of the town learning about its history from the very start of the Danish Trading Station, visiting the old part of town and the busy fishing harbour. In the evening have a welcome dinner at the hotel. (D)
Have the day free to explore the town, or book an extra excursion and then in the evening head out on snow-shoes in the local countryside in search of the northern lights. If you feel like moving at a faster pace you could book a snow-mobile instead - speak to one of the Regent specialists. (B)
Put on your polar suit and prepare to travel in traditional Inuit style, pulled by a team of sled-dogs on a wooden sled. This 2-hour trip will explore the incredible Greenlandic scenery with its ice and snow-covered landscapes. This trip requires a reasonable physical condition and there is the option of booking an extended 5-hour trip or alternative excursions such as snow-mobiling or snow-shoeing. In the evening enjoy a farewell dinner. (B,D)
Transfer back to the airport for the Air Iceland flight back to Reykjavik. (B)
