Exclusive to Regent Holidays - this individual holiday stays overnight in the town of Chernobyl, giving an unparalleled insight into one of the most devastating environmental disasters in human history. This tour is a fascinating introduction to Kyiv, the pleasant Ukrainian capital, but its main focus is an in-depth tour of Chernobyl, a place ever synonymous with the massive nuclear disaster that rocked the Soviet Union and the world in 1986. To this day, a 30km exclusion zone set in place by Ukraine’s “Ministry of Emergencies” circles the area, and the disaster is still very real for the great number of people who have been, and are still being affected by its after effects.
Arrive Kyiv. Transfer to the hotel and check in for 2 nights. Enjoy the rest of the evening at leisure.
Today enjoy a full day city tour of Kyiv including Kreschatyk, the Golden Gates, the St. Sophia and St. Michael Cathedral and the Chernobyl Museum. After lunch visit the Cave Monastery. Spend the evening at leisure. (B,L)
After breakfast depart Kyiv and drive towards Chernobyl. On arrival at the outer boundary of the exclusion zone go through the control checkpoint, before entering the zone. Enjoy lunch and an introductory presentation on the history of the area and an overview of the itinerary. In the afternoon head further into the zone, visiting the exterior of Reactor No. 4, and take in an extended tour of the ghost city of Pripyat. Explore the ruined city, visiting numerous sites such as the school, sports centre, swimming pool and the fairground (please note that it cannot be guaranteed that you can enter these buildings). Return to Chernobyl for dinner and an overnight stay at the Chernobyl Hotel. (B,L,D)
This morning continue the tour of Chernobyl visiting further sites in and around Pripyat, including the Cooling Reservoir with its giant catfish. Providing the authorities continue to permit it, we will also visit the now abandoned Soviet Duga Radar facility. This military base was constructed as part of a Soviet early warning nuclear missile detection system during the cold war and has 2 radars over 150 metres in height.
We will also meet with some locals who have, despite government warnings and laws, decided to settle inside the zone. Leave Chernobyl (after being checked for radiation exposure!) and return to Kyiv. On arrival check in to the Hotel Rus for a 2 night stay. (B,L)
Make use of a free day in Kyiv to discover the capital’s mix of Soviet-inspired architecture and grand Kyivan Rus complexes. Perhaps take a stroll down Andrew’s Descent, (Andriyivsky uzviz) where souvenir stalls, art galleries and restaurants line the quirky cobblestone streets. Stop to admire the baroque beauty of St Andrew’s Church, built in 1754 by the Italian architect who designed St Petersburg’s Winter Palace. At the foot of the uzviz, the histories of the Descent’s buildings are told in the Museum of One Street. Make time to stop for a delicious bowl of borscht topped with sour cream for an authentic taste of Ukraine. Perhaps take in an evening performance at the State Operetta Theatre or National Philharmonic Hall. (B)
