Fly to Beirut direct from London. On arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel in the centre of this lively city.
Meet your guide this morning and head out to explore Beirut. Stop at the National Museum to see the rich history of the country. Artefacts from all over Lebanon are on show, offering an overview of its storied past. Move on to the Roman Baths and then walk through the lively neighbourhoods, strolling down the corniche and seeing Beirut’s modern centre. (B)
Head out across the country to the Bekaa Valley today. Keep an eye on the stunning scenery as you pass by en route to epic Baalbeck. This is a huge Roman site with two vast temples dedicated to Bacchus and Jupiter, as well as well-preserved colonnades and impressive facades. After exploring the site, move on to Anjar with its stunning Umayyad ruins, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. On the way back to Beirut, stop at one of the local wineries to sample some wonderful Lebanese wines. (B)
In the limestone hills behind Beirut you'll find the Jeita caves. This huge network stretches hundreds of metres into the earth, with impressive stalagmites and stalactites everywhere you look. Walk through one cave and take a boat ride through the other heading back above ground. Move on to the coast, to the port of Byblos. In Byblos, visit the Crusader Castle, which is set on the hill amidst the Phoenician ruins. Later explore the narrow streets, home to the souq, which lead you down to the beautiful harbour with its wooden fishing boats. (B)
