This collection of 21 wooden chalets is located around 45 miles from Reykjavík and 11 miles from the small village of Laugarvatn. Situated within Iceland’s Golden Circle, it is a perfect base from which to explore many of the main south-west highlights. This is a great place for northern light spotting as there is no nearby light pollution, so take a walk in the area, stay close to your cottage or relax in one of the hot tubs.
Perhaps spend the morning unearthing the natural wonders of the Golden Circle. Drive to the famous Gullfoss waterfall and explore the Geysir hot spring area, where Strokkur erupts every 10-15 minutes. Walk through Thingvellir National Park, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or visit a geothermal greenhouse. In the afternoon, why not relax at the Laugarvatn Fontana Geothermal Baths, only fifteen minutes’ drive away from the Minniborgir Cottages. The baths vary in depth, size and temperature and the steam rooms built over natural hot springs have been used for this purpose since 1929. Unwind in the warm geothermal pools and natural steam rooms and enjoy a delicious dinner buffet. (B)
Perhaps spend the day uncovering Iceland's south coast. Walk on the black sand beaches of Reynisfjara, visit Thorsmork Nature Reserve and, en route, see the sixty metres-high Skogafoss waterfall. (B)
