Northern Lights in Ilulissat
4 Day Tour, from £2255 per person
The only UNESCO-protected site in Greenland, Ilulissat boats one of the world’s most productive glaciers: Sermeq Kujalleq calves around 46 cubic kilometres of ice every year, decorating the seas around the town with gigantic icebergs as tall as skyscrapers. Located 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, the town’s northerly position also means that chances of seeing the northern lights are extremely high.
Fly from Reykjavik Domestic Airport with Air Iceland to Ilulissat. On arrival meet local guide and transfer to Hotel Arctic for three nights. Situated right on the edge of the Ilulissat ice fjord with stunning panoramic views, Hotel Arctic is the world’s most northerly 4-star hotel. Attend a welcome meeting before enjoying a walking tour, visiting the historic part of the town including the buildings from the original Danish trading station. In the evening the hotel’s Restaurant Ulo offers a gastronomic dining experience where fresh, contemporary dishes can be enjoyed whilst icebergs drift past. After dinner be sure to wrap up warm to head outside in search of the northern lights. Right in the middle of the auroral footprint, with very little ambient light, chances of seeing the northern lights in West Greenland are high. (D)
Today put on your polar suit and enter into the Arctic Wonderland with its ice covered fjords, low mountain passes and where icebergs rise like sculptures. Travel like the polar explorers of the past and travel by dog sledge – this is a traditional Greenlandic experience and there are around 3,500 working sledge doge in Illulissat, which transport locals and tourists alike in the winter months. If you don’t fancy this ask our Regent Greenland specialist about alternative excursions such as a boat trip through the ice-strewn waters of remote Rodebay. (B, D)
Ask your Regent Greenland specialist about optional excursions on this free day. Perhaps join a cruise between the enormous icebergs that tower 100 metres above sea level. It is also possible to explore the icy wilderness by snowmobile discovering the scale of the backcountry as the low sun illuminates the landscape. After dinner, head out on snow shoes to scour the night sky for the northern lights. (B,D)
Transfer back to the airport for the flight to back Reykjavík. Continue onwards to the UK or ask your Regent Greenland specialist about combining this holiday with a stay in Iceland. (B)
