Odyssey Along the Silk Road 2017

The Silk Road stretches thousands of miles from Europe through to China and on this tour you will you follow in the footsteps of the merchants and travellers along a section of this ancient route. Starting in Kyrgyzstan, travel from Osh through the mountains into Western China and the fascinating city of Kashgar, with its famous Sunday animal market and the starting point for the Karakorum Highway. Head over the Torugart Pass and back into mountainous Kyrgyzstan where you will see caravanserai and nomadic herdsmen in their yurt camps. See the striking rock formations of Jety-Oguz and skirt along the shores of Lake Issy-Kul before reaching the fascinating capital of Bishkek. Travel overland into southern Kazakhstan and to Almaty, the country’s largest and most cosmopolitan city, with fascinating squares and museums and visit the beautiful Charyn Canyon.

Return to the airport and fly to Osh. Land and transfer the hotel to freshen up. After lunch visit bustling Jaima bazaar before continuing to Sulaiman Too which is sacred for local Muslims. End the day at the Shakhid Tepa Mosque. (B,L,D)

OSH TO SARY-TASH
This morning drive to visit the clifftop 11th century architectural complex at Uzgen which offers fantastic views of the surrounding countryside followed by a local lunch. Continue the journey to the small village of Sary-Tash which sits close to the Chinese border. Tonight will be spent enjoying friendly local hospitality in a homestay. (B,L,D)

Drive to the Chinese border which a packed lunch enjoyed en-route. After immigration formalities head onwards to the oasis city of Kashgar. Dinner will be enjoyed accompanied by a traditional song and dance show. (B,L,D)

This morning head to the busy and popular Sunday animal market. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet the locals who gather to meet friends and barter for goods. Follow this with a visit to the Sunday bazaar before lunch. Continue to visit the former British and Russian Embassies before the remainder of the day is at leisure to relax or explore further. (B,L)

Spend today exploring Kashgar. Visit the historic old town and the Idkah mosque, the largest in China with as many as 10,000 people gathering here to pray on Fridays. Continue to Apak Hoia Tomb and the pretty Tomb of the Fragrant Concubine which boasts architectural styles from the local Uighur style alongside Arabic and Persian influences. Spend the evening at the colourful night market. (B,L,D)

Travel the iconic Karakorum Highway to Lake Karakul. The lake sits at 3,600 metres and as such is the highest lake in the Pamir plateau offering views of snow covered mountains. On the journey stop at the small village of Opal to buy fresh fruit and bread from local Uyghur stalls before continuing to a scenic spot which offers great photo opportunities. Enter the Oytagh valley and follow the line of the Gaz River to reach the first checkpoint and enjoy a packed lunch by the side of Lake Karakul. Enjoy free time to rest or take a stroll along the lakeside. (B,L)

This morning travel into Kyrgyzstan crossing the scenic Torugart Pass. Meet the Kyrgyz guide and drive towards Naryn. En-route stop to visit the Tash-Rabat caravanserai, a 15th century meeting place for silk road traders and travellers. (B,L,D)

After breakfast visit Salkyn Tor National Park which is home to an abundance of wildlife and a local project trying to restore the deer population. Enjoy lunch in Naryn and continue to Kochkor to visit a felt-making workshop and women's co-operative. There is the chance to watch the women at work and but some of their traditional wares. Spend tonight in a homestay. (B,L,D)

Explore the Dungan Mosque which was built in 1907 as a house of worship by the Dungan community. Continue to the Russian Orthodox Church and the Przhevalsky Museum and Memorial which is dedicated to a great Russian explorer. Drive along the north shore of Lake Issy-Kul and enjoy a picnic lunch in the stunning Grigoriev Gorge. End the day in Cholpon-Ata which sits on the banks of the lake. (B,L,D)

Enjoy an easy day with a visit to the Open Air Petroglyph Museum, the Regional Historical Museum and the Rukh-Ordo cultural centre. Enjoy free time after lunch to relax on the shores of the lake. (B,L,D)

CHOLPON-ATA TO BISHKEK
Jump on board a boat and head out onto the lake for a scenic boat trip before continuing towards Bishkek. En-route stop to visit Burana Tower which sits next to the open-air museum of Balbals (stone warrior grave markings). Enjoy lunch with a Kyrgyz family in Tokmok before pressing on to Bishkek where you will end the day. (B,L,D)

Journey to Ala Archa National Park. En-route visit Ata-Beiit memorial complex which was built to commemorate the victims of Soviet repression. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the park with time to explore before returning to the city. (B,L,D)

BISHKEK TO ALMATY
This morning explore Bishkek. Visit Pobeda and Ala-Too Squares, the National Philharmonic Concert Hall and Dubovy Park, the open-air art gallery. Immerse yourself in the chaos of the colourful bazaar before lunch. Then travel across the Zaili Steppes to Almaty and enjoy dinner in a local restaurant. (B,L,D)

ALMATY
ALMATY
Spend the day in Almaty. Visit Panfilov Park and the Zenkov Cathedral, also known as the Ascension Cathedral and the second tallest wooden building in the world built without nails. Continue to Kok-Tobe Hill which offers fabulous views of the city and the Medeo Gorge and see the speed skating rink which is claimed by the Kazakhs to be the largest in the world. (B,L,D)

CHARYN CANYON

Today drive out to the stunning Charyn Canyon which boasts Grand Canyon-style rock sculptures and multi-coloured gorges. Enjoy the day exploring the canyon before returning to the city for dinner and overnight. (B,L,D)
