North Macedonia, known as ‘The Land of Lakes’, is truly one of the best kept secrets in the Balkans. With a history spanning the Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and Yugoslav empires, a fascinating mix of architectural heritage and distinctive cultures awaits. Explore the beautiful lakeside town of Ohrid and travel further afield to reach Skopje, Bitola and the wine region.
Arrive in Ohrid and transfer to the hotel. Spend the evening at leisure. Ohrid, with its atmospheric old quarter, beautiful churches and of course its lake, is one of North Macedonia’s most charming destinations.
Spend the day touring Lake Ohrid, one of the world’s oldest lakes. Visit a reconstruction of the Bronze Age stilt village or the ‘Bay of Bones’ and the St Naum Monastery – one of the most beautiful monasteries in North Macedonia; its grounds containing the source of Lake Ohrid’s water. Cross over to Pogradec on the Albanian side of the lake for lunch, before heading back to Ohrid via the town of Struga. Spend the evening at leisure. Perhaps explore its old quarter, crammed full of shops and restaurants, or walk up to St Jovan Kaneo Church before dinner for an unforgettable sunset across the lake. (B,L)
Depart Ohrid and spend the day exploring the capital, Skopje, a city where Ottoman influences are still strong. Embark on a walking tour of the new and old parts of the city and stop for a delicious lunch at a traditional restaurant. Visit historic Kale Fortress, Mustafa Pasha Mosque, the Church of Holy Salvation and explore the Old Town with the Chifte Hammam and the Suli Inn. Situated at the heart of the old bazaar, in the immediate vicinity of the Chifte Hammam, the Suli Inn represents an important work of Ottoman architecture. Cross the 15th-century stone bridge which links the bazaar to the modern town and marvel at the grand fountain of Alexander the Great, the main square, the Macedonia Gate, the Memorial House of Mother Teresa and the Old Railway Station, which is the Museum of Skopje. Return to Ohrid and spend the evening at leisure. Perhaps relax at an outdoor café and watch the world go by or enjoy a hearty meal of skara – grilled pork or chicken – and stuffed peppers at one of the city’s many traditional restaurants. (B,L)
This morning drive to Bitola, known during the Ottoman period as ‘the city of Consuls’, an extraordinary mixture of old and new, and a melting pot of cultures and civilisations. Embark on a walking tour of Bitola before continuing to Macedonia’s wine region. North Macedonia’s wine producing reputation is growing rapidly. Visit one of Demir Kapija’s wineries where you will learn about the wine making process and visit the wine cellars as well as enjoy some lunch with wine tasting. Drive back to the peaceful town of Ohrid through Galicica National Park, and stop at a viewpoint with panoramic views across both Ohrid and Prespa lakes. Enjoy a farewell dinner this evening. (B,L,D)
Spend your last day at leisure exploring Ohrid. In the afternoon, transfer to the airport for the flight back to the UK. (B)
